Orphaned into the household of her Aunt Reed at Gateshead subject to the cruel regime at Lowood charity school Jane Eyre nonetheless emerges unbroken in spirit and integrity. She and Mr Rochester fall in love. On their wedding day, Jane discovers that he is married and runs away. When she decides to return … well I’ll let you see it for yourself.
The romance is portrayed at its best by Timothy Dalton and Zelah Clarke in the 1984 BBC TV drama. Readers of the book will know that the series follows the story with far more accuracy than most film adaptations. With four hours to watch, it may seem an arduous task. But with this Alexander Baron, who dramatises the book, was able to keep the story’s integrity. The development of the romance and Jane’s steadfastness is the foundation of the events that follow, and so the time allows the story to breathe. This also gives the actors full rein to act their socks off in some of the most important and memorable scenes. And so they do!
Zelah Clarke is ideal as the nun-like Jane, with her petite frame and quiet manner; and Dalton exacts Mr Rochester’s fire and anger that Brontë gave him. It is difficult to keep ones eyes off Dalton, with his persuasive voice and burning eyes that in the next scene can melt completely when pleading with Jane. Clarke holds her own in her portrayal of Jane, which could so easily be overshadowed by Dalton’s powerful acting. From the quick-witted and deep conversations with Rochester to the revelation of his marriage, Zelah shows Jane’s depth and strength. One to watch is the ‘giggling scene’ where Jane refuses to return her salary. It wasn’t scripted that they should laugh and both found it difficult to keep their faces straight - and you’ll find yourself doing the same.
It’s hard to find fault with this version, although there are a few differences to the book. For example, Jane is shown seeing Mr Rochester on his first return home - it was in fact next day when she did. It could also be considered that Timothy Dalton was far too good-looking for the part, since Jane described Rochester as anything but – and told him so to his face! But who cares? This classic story is turned into an acting masterpiece, and doesn’t leave me dissatisfied - unlike the threadbare version with Charlotte Gainsburgh and William Hurt. For those looking for a version which stays as resolute as Jane herself there will be no disappoint here.
...sisters - in particular, Charlotte. Jane Eyre is probably her most well-known work, and so it's not surprising that there have been several versions of it made on film. But out of all of them, the one that I've been able to watch straight through, enraptured at every moment, has been this version, with Charlotte Gainsborough and William Hurt. I can't officially compare it to the other versions since I haven't seen them in their entirety (though now ... ...synopsis of the story - Jane Eyre is a young girl living with her nightmare aunt who treats her terribly, and ends up sending her to a boarding school. Young Jane is portrayed by Anna Paquin, who does it brilliantly. The loathing for her aunt, her innocence (though accused of so much), and at last her love and loyalty to her only friend Helen Burns - suffice it to say, the movie starts out on the right foot. We're then taken to Jane as a young woman, ...

...found Franco Zeffirelli's adaption of Jane Eyre very disappointing and believe that anybody else who loves the book would feel the same. The storyline, particularly the ending, is so rushed it feels as though you could blink and miss an important part. Seeing as the film is under 2 hours long, that's hardly surprising. A great work or literature shouldn't be condensed in such a way.
It is irritatingly twee at times with a very 'happily ever after' ... ...which should be an indication of it's quality.
If you want to see a decent adaptation of this classic then I'd suggest you buy the 2006 BBC version starring Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens who are both brilliant in it. It consists of 4 episodes each lasting an hour which gives the story line the depth it needs. ...

JaneEyre- What can I say I love this film...
Ever since this was on BBC on a Sunday night, I found myself hooked to it. I am youngish and I would never have thought I would have liked one of the Bronte tales, as this is what my Nan enjoys but I really enjoyed it that much I had to get the DVD version!
The Novel Itself

Being a Charlotte Bronte and JaneEyre fan I wasn't expecting it to appeal to me as much as it did. Another period drama to fill in an hour on a Sunday evening. Nevertheless, appealed to me it did.
JaneEyre. The classic story of a plain governess falling in love with the master of the house and vice versa. A tale which many a person could watch and read without getting tired off. With a simple background you could easily say what happens is all very obvious and predictable. However that doesn't make it any less enjoyable.
This BBC adaption stars Toby Stephens ( son of Maggie Smith!) and Ruth Wilson. Both fitting their roles perfectly with Ruth portraying a deep emotive and modest Jane and Toby becoming the powerful and masculine Mr Rochester. The way he managed to show the character as a real emotional figure, reflecting ...

There have been many retellings of this world renowned novel, including the 1983 BBC adaptation staring Timothy Dalton and Zelah Clarke, and the 1996 film by Franco Zeffirelli staring Charlotte Gainsbourg and William Hurt.
This adaptation includes many scenes that previous adaptations and films have left out, such as the gypsy scene. It is also more passionate than many others, with good sexual tension between the characters. Much of Jane?s childhood is skipped over in this version, which prevents you from seeing the formation of her ...

DVD Description
Charlotte Bronte's classic novel of Gothic romance gets the Zeffirelli treatment in this moving adaptation. Orphaned Jane Eyre (Charlotte Gainsbourg) grows into a strong-willed heroine after enduring a miserable childhood (where she's played by Anne Paquin). Things start looking better when she falls in love with the brooding Rochester (William Hurt), lord of the manor where she gets a job as governess. Unfortunately, Rochester's family skeletons threaten to sabotage their happy ending. Director Franco Zeffirelli (HAMLET, OTHELLO, ROMEO AND JULIET) stays faithful to the book while stressing natural characters and landscapes over stylized gloom and mystery, with rewarding results.
