Advantages: Shows joyful side of tragic Du Pré; invaluable performances; entertaining spots. Disadvantages: Too short, unfocused, worshipful; expensive for 1 hour film.
...listen to Du Pré's arresting rendition of J.S. Bach's 'cello Suites Nos. 1 and 2 (on an EMI Classics CD of her BBC Recordings), and I swear you will be a changed person afterwards. Alas, the Bach suites are not featured in this documentary.
The NOT-SO-GOOD:
I give this video a qualified recommendation to classical music--especially 'cello--fans, and of course, to followers of Du Pré. The main shortcomings include the truncated and thrown-together feel of the documentary, as it runs for a total of just 57 minutes and leaves much to be desired in the commentary and editing. The lack of greater form and substance to Nupen’s film is a real drawback. It's a short and heartfelt tribute to the greatness of Du Pré, made (I believe) for airing on what would have been the cellist's 50th birthday, January 26, 1995, and Nupen's worshipful bent comes...

Advantages: You will "watch" the "big Blue" Disadvantages: You will want to live near the sea...
...A dive into a mixed see of cultures, experiences, and cultures... you have frenchs, italians, americans... and a lot more... reaching deeper without oxygen is the purpose. But mainly to tell the world the story of Jacques Mayol (the main charachter wich is also technical consultant for the movie). and his discovery of life outside the water... Great performace of Jean Réno one of the most used actors of Luc Besson.
The story starts with two kids Jacques Mayol and Enzo Molinari, a french skinny guy and an strong fat italian, but two very good divers, they don't hate each other but they stick with different actitudes, Jacques wants to help the others, while Enzo will do everything for money and to be one of the best! Then one day while Jacques wents to help is father and is uncle with the fishing is father as an accident and dies...

...- you cant take them seriously with the pitch of the voices.
Personally I watch the film and find that I have lost myself in the underwater scenery and even the very 1980's score by Eric Serra doesnt detract from my enjoyment (I in fact own the soundtrack on CD but without the images on screen find it annoying and overly synthesised). The fact that Jean Marc-Barr is not entirely unattractive possibly also has an effect on my enjoyment also. Though after writing this I am once again left questioning what it is that I love about the film exactly, I cant answer the question well enough to explain so it must simply be enough that I can still say I do love it even after questioning why.
There are no real special features on the DVD, though personally I would have liked to have found information on the real life Enzo and Jacques on whom...
