FILM REVIEW ONLY
What is Jackass? Is it a social commentary on our mundane lives? Is it a desperate attempt to be noticed by our closed door society? Or is it simply a load of maniacs performing crazy stunts, including riding down a hill in a shopping trolley? Definately the latter. Jackass is a movie like no other movie, it has no plot, no beginning or end and no life lessons learned. Put simply, it's just absolutely insane. I enjoyed the Jackass television series on Channel 4 a few years ago, because I enjoy watching people perform crazy stunts without caring what people think, even if they are putting their lives in the hands of fate. It's like watching a cruder, madder version of Dom Joly's excellent Trigger Happy TV, with much more blood, carnage and unbelievably stupid stunts. In essence the movie version of Jackass is the same as the TV series, but obviously longer and with madder stunts, with Jonny Knoxville and his crew upping the ante.
Many people are angry with Jackass for its complete and utter lack of
morals and the fact that people are being filmed unpurposely trying to hurt themselves. I'm not of this view. If people are willing to hurt themselves and put it on film then that's their choice. I'll just sit back and enjoy. And trust me, for those of you who like these kind of programmes, then you'll enjoy it as well. The film starts with an introduction to the gang as they perform one of their stunts; that is, going downhill in a shopping trolley. Steve-O, Johnny Knoxville, Jason "Weeman" Acuna, Preston Lacy, Bam Margera, Chris Pontius and Dave England are the main stars of the show, each of them intent on maiming themselves. I love the opening sequence and the music used as the lads squabble and fight as they're going downhill in the trolley, there's something mesmerising about it, but I'm not sure what.
This film is definately for true fans of the series or those who enjoy watching people intentionally hurt themselves. For those of you who don't enjoy this type of programme (and I'm sure there are quite a lot) then steer clear, you won't enjoy watching this. A couple of months ago I performed a very tame Jackass stunt (just for the hell of it) when I rode down the stairs in a cardboard box, but compared to some of the stunts performed on Jackass it was nothing (even if my friends enjoyed watching it). These guys really are crazy, but strangely likeable even if they are doing some pretty daft things. Some of the stunts are cruder then others; for example one of them involves going into a plumbing store and using their toilet, while another stunt involves eating a urine soaked snow cone. Yuk!
The more dangerous stunts are the best but also the scariest, including the sequence in which Jonny Knoxville rides a golf club, disturbing the people playing there, and unintentionally flipping the buggy over. Knoxville was injured during this one, and to be honest I'm not surprised, looking at the state of the golf club afterwards. There is also a destruction derby type sequence, in which Knoxville drives a rent-a-car into a derby, and then returns the car back to the rental place. The look on the owners face when he sees the car is truly brilliant, and one of the funniest sequences in the film. I actually prefer the more candid camera type stunts involving members of the public, although some of the bigger stunts are still enjoyable.
In essence Jackass is a hit and miss affair, but still more hit then miss. Some of the stunts work really well whereas some of the others just seem overly cruel to the members of the public they're trying to humiliate. Obviously Jackass is intended for a very select audience, which is the reason for some of the more outrageous stunts, but it will still be a firm favourite with rebellious teenagers who like watching people perform crude and unbelievably dangerous stunts. The reason Jackass works is that the humour is 'real', even if they are playing to the camera in some of the stunts. The key thng is that the stunts aren't staged, with the lead stars genuinely risking their lives, in comparison to something like Deuce Bigalow which falls flat on its face because of the fact that it's fake.
Jackass is a crazy and entertaining movie, and has led to a number of inferior copycats, including the crude but less funny Dirty Sanchez. Jackass will never win any 'Best Picture' Oscars, but that was never its intention. It's just a lewd, crude film about a bunch of lads doing what they enjoy. Jackass 2, which will probably contain even more extreme stunts, is out soon.

A completely stupid film, but I have still watched it twice and although I was shaking my head in disgust most of the time, I was laughing all of the time

Review of Jackass - The Movie (DVD)
Advantages: Will keep the fans happy, some genuine laugh out loud moments. Disadvantages: Drags on, just a lengthened episode, not too funny on the whole.
