Jack and the Beanstalk - THE REAL STORY 2001

Advantages: Great Classic story with a twist, and magnificent ending.
Disadvantages: 3 hours 20 minutes- a bit long

from space, It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie, Muppets Party Cruise and The Muppets' Wizard of Oz. Well how could we describe the genre of this movie? I think it's definitely a drama and adventure film but more obviously a fairy tale! Matthew Modine plays the role of Jack Robinson, who is a very wealthy businessman and has no time for anything other than work, yet he doesn't realise that he is about to face the family curse where no man in the Robinson line lives past the age of thirty. Prior to his birthday, he stumbles across the remains of a giant's skeleton as well as someone who claimed to know the giant. He meets a woman (Mia Sara) who takes him to another world and the true story is revealed to him - the original Jack and the Beanstalk. In order to save his own life before his curse takes effect, and to save the world ...

The Wizard of Oz

Advantages: Fun for most of the family
Disadvantages: Seems a little dated but that's to be expected

on TV at Christmas. I like this film but as a young child I found the Witch of the West rather frightening. It may not be suitable for very small children, I think. Or maybe I was just too soft! What's often startling about "The Wizard of Oz" is the change from black and white to colour and back again. At the time this version was made, black and white signified reality as used in documentaries and colour meant fantasy. This is how we know Oz isn't real but we wonder how Dorothy will get back. As I said earlier, the story has been made lots of times but this is the one everyone remembers, not least because of Judy Garland's performance. She looks like a woman but again, is playing someone supposedly much younger. It's worth putting it into context as well. In 1939 trouble was brewing in Europe with the Second World War ...

Review of The Wizard Of Oz (DVD)

There's no place like Oz!

Advantages: a classic for all ages!
Disadvantages: scary witch!

I bought this DVD today because in Woolworths, they were offering it for £5.99 for a DVD or £2.99 for the VHS, with any other purchase. As Im always up for a bargain, I purchased this new addition to my or should I say my sons collection! Wizard of Oz is based on the book of the same name written by L. Frank Baum and was judged the best family movie of all time. The film has been digitally remastered, ensuring clear viewing and stereo sound with added extras of how it was made! Everyone knows the heroine of the story, Dorothy, played by the wonderful Judy Garland. Although Judy Garland was the not the first choice for Dorothy, Shirley Temple was not considered right for the part! Judy was plump and had a pretty look without being too beautiful but she could sing and dance and simply beamed. She was perfect for what was needed ...
