~:∞:~:∞:~:∞:~:∞:~ JACK AND THE BEANSTALK: THE REAL STORY (2001) ~:∞:~:∞:~:∞:~:∞:~
This is an imaginative production on the traditional Jack and the Beanstalk story. While it was made for young kids, the story maintains adequate complexity to keep adults interested. But it really is something worth watching - it sure does have an unusual ending.
Starring Richard Attenborough, Matthew Modine, Vanessa Redgrave, Mia Sara, Daryl Hannah and many more - together they have certainly produced a fantastic film for us to watch. Although these actors aren't famous as say- people like Jennifer Aniston, Cameron Diaz or Brad Pitt or anyone like that, it sure is a great film. This astounding movie is directed by Brian Henson who funnily enough directed a lot of the "Muppets" movies: Muppets from space, It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie, Muppets Party Cruise and The Muppets' Wizard of Oz.
Well how could we describe the genre of this movie? I think it's definitely a drama and adventure film but more obviously a fairy tale! Matthew Modine plays the role of Jack Robinson, who is a very wealthy businessman and has no time for anything
other than work, yet he doesn't realise that he is about to face the family curse where no man in the Robinson line lives past the age of thirty. Prior to his birthday, he stumbles across the remains of a giant's skeleton as well as someone who claimed to know the giant. He meets a woman (Mia Sara) who takes him to another world and the true story is revealed to him - the original Jack and the Beanstalk. In order to save his own life before his curse takes effect, and to save the world of giants- yes, there's more than one: He must correct the wrongs of the past and return the magical harp and the golden egg laying goose to their rightful home. Can he do it in time before he turns thirty? Well you will just have to find out…
The film is a visually captivating reproduction on the tale of Jack the Giant Killer that implies Jack to be a liar and a thief - the bad guy in all of this. The film is astounding and set in modern times gives the marvellous fairy tale a great twist. It implies that Jack's theft of the goose that laid the golden eggs and the singing mystical harp results in three hundred and sixty four days of famine for the denizens of the giant's world, and that the giant Thunderdell (Bill Barretta) was in fact a beneficent and loved keeper of his people.
It's a great DVD package presented in the original aspect of 1.33:1 together with the Dolby Digital 5.1 sound mix but there is also the 2.0 surround sound option which I prefer but the Dolby Digital makes great use of all the channels. With extra behind the scene footage and features including things like documentaries and creature manipulations and much more, this DVD just couldn't get any better.
One thing I particularly liked about this film was the soundtrack. The film music was exceptional and has won a few awards for being one of the best film music ever to be made. In my opinion Rupert Gregson Williams created an amazingly enchanting soundtrack to this film with the elegant sounding harp and all the other magical melodies which portrayed the movement and action on the screen perfectly.
The running time for this film is approximately 3 hours and 20 minutes which you are probably thinking is a long film to watch. But it is similar to somewhat like a Lord of The rings film, and I definitely think it is worth watching. I highly recommend this DVD and it can be bought for as little as £10.97 from www.amazon.co.uk and it's definitely worth watching. And remember it's for you all of you adults as well, and besides I think that children under the age of 8 may find it a bit confusing and complex.
