Whilst sat watching the adverts on the TV I heard the song "Stars" by Simply Red which always makes me think of one of my favourite girlie films, Jack and Sarah and decided to force my other half into watching it as I wanted to watch something different.
The film is based on Jack (Richard E Grant) a Lawyer who is married to his lovely wife Sarah (Imogen Stubbs) and when we meet the couple it is clear that they are to be parents shortly, they are living in a house which has still not been completed by the builders and Jack has to cope with the tramp that lives in his skip, his snobbery at the beginning of the film is so typically British where he looks down his nose at everyone and people just laugh at him behind his back, whereas his wife Sarah is the more patient of the couple and spends her time being more diplomatic with the builders to ensure that the house is finished before the new arrival ...well arrives and true to form within the first 15 minutes of the film we are introduced to the main storyline when Jack's wife Sarah passes away during childbirth leaving Jack to cope with the new baby. It is clear that Jack is finding it hard enough to cope with losing his wife, his solemate without having to cope with a demanding baby that he feels no connection to after his wife was lost through giving birth to his child.
Don't be put off by thinking that this is the plot of the story as it isn't by far, there is so much more to this film and its real mixture of characters that this movie hasn't even begun.
Jack's mother and Sarah's parents are left to look after the baby and to try and get Jack to take his responsibilities at face value and become the father he had planned to be, before losing Sarah, he gets around this by employing a Nanny, Amy (Samantha Mathis)purely by accident and she finds that she gets a little more than she bargained for when she decides to accept the job and work as a live in nanny for Jack. I really am not all that keen on the character Amy and wonder why they felt that they had to cast an american to play the role as there would certainly be some better alternative actresses who could make a little more of the role.
The film has a very simple plot but it works well and the characters are all a little mismatched which again lead to some suprising storylines within the film and suprising endings.
For instance Dame Judy Dench plays Jack's mother, Margaret and she plays the character well and is easy to relate to as an interfering mother who believes her experience and knowledge is best and goes about bossing her son.
Ian McKellan plays the tramp in the skip and it really is strange how his role develops in the movie, the character is played well and like Jack you will find yourself warming to his character towards the end of the film.
All of the characters have good hearts and are keen to love the baby as much as they possibly can and this does often result in various arguements between members of the family as they get a little over possesive of the new addition.
Eileen Atkins plays Sarah's mother and Jack's mother in law, she seems to stand back in the sidelines letting Jack find his feet without being too interfering, maybe this is because she is still coming to terms with the loss of her daughter and can see Jack's side a little more clearly that the other family members but all the same she is a calm, sympathetic character that works well with the other characters.
There are no real twists in the story but it is a great girly film that will have you both laughing and crying. What makes this film work is that the characters and the storyline is completely believable and it will truly melt the coldest of hearts.
Summary: Ideal for a girls night in on the sofa with a box of chocs!!
