Advantages: Not many, if any Disadvantages: Lewis Carroll would NOT be pleased
and the slithy toves doth gire and gimble in the wabes.."
I think I've remembered that correctly, and spelling's hardly important, but I digress.
Michael Palin usually produces some of the finest and most bizarre moments in English comedy history. Sadly this one just rates as bizarre. It's not a clever bizarre as in "Brazil", but just tediously bizarre.
It is set in a time that has medieval influences, but just the feel and design, not in speech ... ...but sadly without many memorable laughs.
In fact, now I come to think of it, hardly anything about the film stands out. No, that's not true.
There's one scene when Palin's character goes to see his girlfriend's father, played by Warren Mitchell. (The girlfriend, by the way, has not been blessed with a fantastic figure or good looks, although I'm sure she's a lovely girl in real life.) Upon arriving at the hovel that most peasants called home, he ...

Advantages: Pythonesque humour Disadvantages: made way back when
The Jabberwocky is a film, which I think appeals to most. It will certainly appeal to those python fans as it is performed by Michael Palin and directed by Terry Gilliam, also appearing is Terry Jones another python. Not only does it include pythons, but it also has the feel of a python made film about it, noticeably that of "The Holy Grail". It was also a turning point for how films were to be made later on, especially those of a historic genre. ... ...use dyes on the teeth etc. This gives it a very true and grim feel, one that is apt to the "dark" ages. After this was made other films followed suit and realised how ignorant they had been before. Of course people didn't have perfectly white teeth, clean clothes etc. The film is mainly set within a grim and decaying castle, one that resembles that of the one in gormenghast. When we are taken inside the walls by one Dennis Cooper (Palin's peasant), ...

Advantages: Appealing simplicity, Palin / Gilliam option Disadvantages: Might not be as good as you would hope
I bought this film after a friend kept on going on about it. Having looked at reviews before watching I knew not to expect the full python experience - I was glad I was warned about this or I feel it might have spoiled my enjoyment of what was a reaonably good film. Many of the pythonesque subtle gags remained though - always a good thing. I recommend listening to it with the Palin / Gilliam commentary then watching again in normal mode. You'll pick ...

Advantages: You can use the DVD as a frisbee, or cup coaster. Disadvantages: Everything. It's appaulingly bad.
I hated this film, it was terrible. I could barely watch it to the end. Created by Terry Gilliam, i now think he is a terrible editor because of this film. It was maybe the poor acting that ruined it i'm not so sure. I had never heard it was based on a poem by Lewis Carrol until recently, and i still think the film is appauling. With terrible acting and not funny jokes, the only place for this film is in the jaws of the stupid Jabberwock or whatever ... ...awesome and funny, but it is nothing to compare to this. It looks like a very low budget amateur film, and plays out even worse. After the death of his father Cooper, 'Dennis Cooper' goes to the town where he has to pass several boring and unfunny escapades. The town and the whole kingdom is threatened by a ridiculous thing called 'Jabberwocky'. Will Dennis make his fortune? can anyone kill the "monster"? I do not recommend this unless you are a ...

DVD Description
Opening with a quote from Lewis Carroll's classic nonsensical poem, Terry Gilliam's JABBERWOCKY is a darkly comic medieval masterpiece about a monster wreaking havoc on helpless villages. Michael Palin stars as Dennis Cooper, a happy-go-lucky ne'er-do-well stock taker who becomes the unlikely hero in a castle's efforts to defeat the great green beast. The unwitting and pathetic Dennis is in love with Griselda, the furthest thing from a classic princess heroine that film has ever seen. However, she wants nothing to do with Dennis, who is renounced by his father on his deathbed, setting him off on a hysterical adventure that winds up with him facing off against the monster itself. The jousting scenes are particularly funny--and very gruesome, lending the film its seriocomic tone that had the audience somewhat baffled at first, although it's now much loved. The film is a brilliant parody of medieval epics, featuring lavish costumes, a medieval score, and terrific sets. Monty Python regulars Terry Jones and Neil Innes make cameo appearances, as does director Gilliam himself.
