Nell: [Woody in Nell's body gives up putting on a bra] Okay girls today we are going al natural.
Woody: [on seeing Woody in Nell's body is dressed] You look like a prostitute
Nell: [Woody in Nell's body] Damn... I was going for high class hooker
Woody: [Waking up in Nell's body] Oh my God! I have tits! I have tits!
There's a hell of a lot of teen flicks around - I should know, I've seen most of 'em. You get the rare great one - "She's All That", "Cruel Intentions", "Mean Girls" and that old classic "Clueless" are the best in my opinion - and there's tons of ones that are more than entertaining, but nowadays the majority are just, well, PANTS!!! Let's face it, there are just so many on the market, and the same themes just seem to recur over and over, and the same old cliches dragged out time and time again. Unless something has a fabulous theme, fantastic acting or brilliant one-liners, how is it POSSIBLY going to make itself stand out from the pack?
Being somewhat of a teen movie connoisseur myself (sad but true!), despite the same old movie seeming to be released time and time again, I always keep an eye out for this genre of movie. Call me weird (and you probably will) but I do like to watch these things and come to my OWN opinion, not judge it based on some critic's review and nothing else (as I've said before, I have found myself more likely to LIKE a film which has been critically panned than hate it). So when I watched a T4 special earlier in the year about "It's a Boy/Girl Thing" I was immediately interested in seeing the film itself.
Three things made me want to see this film. Firstly that the female lead in the film was Samaire Armstrong, who played Anna in the teen drama series "The OC". As I had only seen her in this role and in a supporting role in the Lindsay Lohan film "Just My Luck", I was interested to see how she would hold up with top star billing. The second was that the film's executive producer is none other than Elton John (and one of the producers is John's partner David Furnish) - I was interested to see the kind of film he would put his name behind, and was interested in the fact it was a teen film of all things! The third was that, while this film uses an old wellworn theme (that of bodyswapping - how many remakes of "Freaky Friday has there been???), it put an interesting twist on it: it asks what would happen if a teenage boy and girl swapped bodies?
It is quite an interesting situation. After all, we have Nell (Armstong) and Woody (Kevin Zegers - "Transamerica"), two characters who live next door to one another and can't stand each other, as we find out within the first five minutes or so of the film. Nell is an intelligent, opinionated girl who doesn't seem to care what anyone thinks of her while Woody is the cool football player who is probably not as dumb as people think he is. They really couldn't be more different. So when after a trip to a museum when they wake up in each other's bodies, it is understandably hard to cope with. After all, not only are they trapped inside a person they HATE, they also have to cope with the most alien of things. Woody now has breasts, and Nell has an early morning erection she can't get rid of! They also have the other's parents to cope with, and everyone else's expectations of them.
At the beginning, after the initial shock, they use this bodyswap to exact revenge on each other (Nell preppies up Woody's image, Woody turns her into a tart; Nell dumps Woody's girlfriend, Woody tries to lose her virginity for her) with hilarious results. However, as the body swap continues with no end in sight, Nell and Woody have to face the fact that if they want their futures to work out the way they want them to, they're going to have to work together to get their bodies back - or try to understand one another better. Will romance blossom between the pair?
I think what won me over most with this film was the performances of the two leads. It must be incredibly hard for a girl to play a guy trapped in a girl's body and vice versa - and both Armstong and Zegers pulled this off brilliantly. They managed to make their portayals seem so realistic that at times I got confused about who was who, and where one ended and the other began. There were lots of lovely little touches that it must have been hard to think of - liked Nell-trapped-in-Woody's body getting into a car like a girl. These were all little things that added to the humour, just as Nell-as-Woody bursting into tears or Woody-as-Nell trying to beat up a guy and then realising she has no upper body strength will cause a giggle. And can I just point out in addition the sheer YUMMINESS of Kevin Zeger. I didn't realise what a beautiful guy I'd been missing out on until I watched this film - he is SERIOUS guy candy!
The film is first and foremost a comedy, partly due to the aforementioned silliness of the bodyswap and partly due to a lot of funny lines. If you like teen comedies, and enjoyed "Freaky Friday" or "Thirteen Going On Thirty", I think you will definitely enjoy this. Of course, the film is not without its cheesy moral subtext - obviously, it's trying to tell us that despite our obvious differences, guys and girls ain't all that different from one another. Deep down, we all worry about similar things - our futures, what others think of us, etc. And perhaps it takes a walk in the other person's shoes for us to see this?
Or you could just watch this film and learn instead. Although part of me would quite like to know what it was like to be able to pee standing up...

I loved this film. It's the type of film I always go for. I found it really funny throughout the whole film and found myself laughing every few lines. The actors played their parts really well , and there was good chemistry between the two. At times I did find the film confusing as the boy was now in the girl's body and the girl was now in the boy's body , so when they were calling each other "me" and "you" it was quite confusing when they were ...

...of this trite little movie. It's trying desperately to be a warts-and-all version with references to genitalia, sex and a bit of swearing. But it's really not as daring as it thinks, getting mired down in high school movie clichés and predictable plotting. British TV director Nick Hurran simply can't break away from them, from the vapid peroxide head cheerleader, to the overbearing mother, right down to the cringe-worthy sight of the Yale University ... ...characters they re playing, though it's hardly surprising considering the sexual references and implicit nudity. The thing is that they all look their real ages, and Emily Hampshire, who plays snivelling Chanel appears to be in her thirties. So you'll be hard pressed to care about the characters and will have lost interest two minutes into the ninety-four minute running time.
The screenplay by former new romantic Geoff Deane is a teen movie by-the-numbers. ...

First of all, I would like to say that I hate being the one who is protecting something which is obviously getting criticized, it makes me feel and seem like I haven’t got a clue.
But, I am about to review a film which Is a teen romantic comedy and lets face it, they are all the same and therefore, to criticize it on the grounds that it is the same as other films, is basically telling me something I’m not stupid enough not to know!!
It’s a Boy ... ...Samaire Armstrong who plays a very clever teenage girl Nell, and Kevin Zegers who plays Woody the football player!
The first ten minutes of the movie is an insight into the lives of these two teenagers who happen to be neighbours and absolutely hate each other, due to being so different, then in true teen flick style, the pair argue in front of an Aztec statue on a school trip, and in the morning they wake up in each others body and each others ...

IT'S A BOY/GIRL THING is a comedy that follows two teenagers who one day wake up to find that they have magically swapped bodies with each other. Nell (Samaire Armstrong) and Woody (Kevin Zegers) are neighbours, living right next to each other.
