Synopsis ---------------
A young couple Celia and Christopher land on the beautiful island of Mykonos. They soon mix in with the locals and find themselves some reasonably priced accommodation. The evening is a typical one; they have a nice meal and a walk around the harbour before ringing home. "Mother, do you know what I'm doing?" asks Christopher "I'm having sex with Celia" a rather muffled squeal of disappointment is heard from the end of the phone.
Celia and Christopher are no normal couple; they have a strange combination of interests Photography, sexual depravity, religion and a taste for blood.
Having allowed themselves to settle into the community Celia is pushed into seducing a French artist who is painting an island chapel for a friend. Celia visits him at the chapel and begins her seductive routine. Having allowed the encounter to go so far, Christopher pops up from behind a wall. Within seconds the two have the artist crusified to the floor, and are filling him (via mouth) with paint.
Their wicked ways don't stop there and it's only a matter of time before they are chopping people's heads off with heavy machinery and chasing homosexuals through the streets with a Samurai sword. The arrival of a Detective on the island leads you to the conclusion this is not a passing bit of holiday fun.
My Opinion -----------------
You have to love Island Of Death, it's so bad that it's good. The acting is awful, the story line is not much better but I defy anyone not to watch this with a smile on their face.
We treated my Grandmother (then aged 80) to the pleasure of this Christmas 1993. "Its pornography!" she shrieked. Bless her I don't think she has ever seen any pornography. This was not what she was expecting to find following up the Queens Christmas speech. But even she could not stop herself from a hysterical fit.
To take this on a blow by blow trip of "badness" is quite difficult; the film looks, and sounds promising from the beginning. But as soon as you see the telephone box scene you fully aware that both the film and you are on a trip to hell in a hand basket.
Even in the 1970's Mykonos was known as a Mecca for the homosexual community, so why on earth Celia and Christopher are horrified to find gay men and women on the island is beyond me. The deaths are quite original throughout the film, transport yourself back to 1975 and you can safely say that most had not been done before.
Island of Death is most notorious for several things firstly an encounter with Christopher and a middle aged lady, in which he urinates on her and she is obviously very pleased with her treat. In another scene Christopher awakes in rather a frisky mood, Celia rejects him and he heads off to the garden to have sex with something else. What he finds is a goat! Not content with having sex with the goat he then chops its head off; I can only presume that this is due to the fact that the goat may tell others. But possibly more notoriously and what the censors objected to the most was that Christopher and Celia frequently integrate religion with their acts of depravity. For a variety of these reasons and the of course the shocking ending the movie was one of the first to be banned during the 1984 department of public prosecutions act.
Island of Death remained banned until 2003 when it was released with a bit of trimming to the movie in order to stop the complaints flooding back in again.
The film itself is so well shot that you find it difficult to believe that such dreadful acting would be included. Oscars have been awarded for lesser cinematography.
Now we go onto the soundtrack, Nico Mastorakis the director of the movie and some of his friends sat around one night drunk and recorded the soundtrack with a couple of basic instruments. For this alone you really should see the movie.
I would normally list the cast at this point, but none of the cast went on to do anything after this, and it's not surprising really.
If you enjoy horror movies, you really should invest in this. You can pick it up off Ebay for around £2 and it will provide you with hours of amusement. The DVD has a couple of VIPCO trailers but has no special features or subtitles.
Advantages: Good clean, sick fun Disadvantages: Tedious tune and credits
introduction to each member of the Happy Tree friends, a special pop corn video episode (like VH1's pop up video), an audio commentary from the creators, Storyboard to episode comparisons, a variety of additional sketches and character designs, the original never before seen pilot episode. And the for the first time a brand new exclusive to DVD episode introducing a brand new character.
If you're a sicko like me you'll love The Happy Tree Friends, the Christmas I showed my grandmother Island Of Death, I also showed her this. You have never seen such a hysterical drunken mess in your life. This DVD is great for those nights that you leave a pub or club with a group of mates to go back to your house, no awkward silences here. Though you will be witness to a few jaw dropping moments. But ultimately you'll not only be drunk but laughing too ...
