Time destroys everything...

Advantages: Realism, unique storytelling that works on dozens of levels
Disadvantages: ultra violent and graphic, only select audiences will fully appreciate it

Disgust, despair, anger, joy, disturbed, enthralled, amused, amazed, informed, indulged, insulted, intoxicated, nauseated: how many films can you say have made you feel all of these human infatuations (and more) at the same time? The bizarre/bewilderment that that feeling must depict is reflected in that of controversial French film: “Irreversible”. While the term ‘controversial’ is tossed around all too often in films, “Irreversible” can safely ...
...controversial films ever made’. The BBFC (British Board Of Film Classification) were very brave to let the film in our cinemas and our DVD collections uncut as it depicts (in reverse chronology) a savage and unflinching rape and the subsequent act of vengeance that makes the violence in “The Passion Of The Christ” look like a playground scrap… at a primary school… for girls… I don’t remember “Passion” prompting record mass multiplex walkouts by cinemagoers ... more

...simple as this: what is irreversible is not the order of events but the events themselves. The characters found themselves in a situation where neither reason nor rationality could override their instincts; an irreversible or unalterable force. What is striking is that the credits appear first, from top to bottom and in reverse order. This immediately increases the tension, before the music kicks in slowly as the title Irreversible is reached. The ...
...Our very first scenes within Irreversible begin with a vaguely illuminated house. The camera appears to explore the outer walls through a sequence of slowly rotating, panning camera shots. The flashing blue lights of the emergency services begin to illuminate the walls further: it is at this point that we realise something terrible has occurred. A remarkably poignant start in my eyes. Irreversible tells the story of a revenge killing as a result ...

Advantages: Unique format, brave performances
Disadvantages: A couple of undeleted scenes

Where to begin? This film looks back on a night in the life of three people - Alex is dating Marcus, but used to be going out with Pierre. We take a long time to meet Alex, but she's mentioned enough. What the film starts with, however, is a frantic search through a very dark and seedy gay sex club, the Rectum, as the two guys go on a trail of vicious revenge. Flash back to the two guys searching out a guy called Le Tenia in the Rectum, then flash ...
...name they have uncovered, and then flash back to the two guys leaving a party together. If you flash back far enough you get to the three friends all going to the party together, and back before that to earlier in that afternoon, and before then... That's right, this is that film you've vaguely heard of that is played backward - no, people don't walk and talk backwards, rather every scene comes before the one before. It's been done in fiction already ...

...bothers me. Going into Irreversible then, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. It's the kind of film that the Daily Mail would probably have banned in a second if they were given the chance. It is, according to Newsweek, the most walked out of film ever. After reading about it's brutality, I thought I may have found something that could get to me. This wasn't the case though, and I ended up watching Irreversible much like I would any other film. ...
...explicit. I didn't feel the need to switch the film off at any point. Still, while I'm commenting on my reaction, I'm neglecting the merits of the film itself. On a technical level, it's a marvel to watch. Reverse chronology, extended single shots, brilliant acting, and so many subtle nuances that one probably couldn't notice on just a single viewing. It's not really a film that the viewer can enjoy, but it's one that can be appreciated. The film ...

A young couple - Marcus and Alex (Vincent Cassel and Monica Bellucci - married in real life) - are madly in love. Their lives are torn apart when Alex is raped, beaten and left for dead in a Parisian subway. Goaded by two local hoods, Marcus seeks bloody revenge with the help of his friend Pierre (Albert Dupontel). Echoing Craven's film, we ...

And, believe me, after this 95 minute assault on the senses, you will be eager to watch this troublesome classic again. Irreversible - once you have watched it you'll never forget it

Advantages: Incredible use of light and sound
Disadvantages: Deeply distressing

Running backwards, Irreversible is the story of 3 friends whose lives are changed forever by the events of one intense evening. Alex (played by Monica Belluci) is brutally beaten and raped in an underpass on her way home from a house party in Paris. This leads her boyfriend, Marcus (Vincent Cassel) and ex-partner Pierre (Albert Dupontel) to seek revenge on the man who has committed this terrible act. The distorted sound at the beginning of the film and intense strobe lights at the end make the feel an even more intense and ...

Baise Moi this is rubbish

Advantages: cheap
Disadvantages: porn dressed in pretention

another french film called irreversable, compared to that , Baise Moi is shown up as the nasty exploitation flick it is. I am a fan of all types of film and chose this as a recommendation from someone who had not seen irreversable, needless to say that when i showed him that he seen changed his mind. The dvd has scant extras, a short making of, a small question and answer session with the director, that goes round in circles trying to add layers to this shallow tale and the usual trailer stuff. You can pick it up fairly cheap from online retailers at about seven quid or in high street promotions, the cover depicts one of the main characters in their underwear holding a gun in a pink haze. Its around seventy minutes long, thank god. And carries an obvious eighteen rating Theres nothing i can recommend about this film to be honest, as i ...

Review of Baise-Moi DVD

Definately missing that special ingredient

Advantages: Successfully squanders every second of its duration
Disadvantages: Only one extra that fails to compensate for the downfalls of the film

, was a direct result of the film's lack of effort to build up any compassion with the characters it wants you to feel upset about the death of. You find it a real struggle relate to the trauma of the situation because the characters are not really built up at all through the movie, and you don't feel like you have formed any kind of relationship with them, which is one of the fundamental flaws that holds the film back from being the tear-jerker it had the potential to be. This film has been compared to 'American Beauty', maybe because they both had a couple of blonde girls in them, but apart from that I can't really see why. Not only did the movie challenge the sloth for slowest moving thing on the planet, there were also parts where its incoherency becomes so obvious you want to cringe, namely the permanent and irreversible removal ...
