Joanna Gleason (Best Actress - Into The Woods) and the rest of the original Broadway cast weave their magic spell in this masterful presentation of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's musical classic, Into The Woods, a seamless fusion of fairytales that strike at the child's heart within us all. A baker and his wife journey into the woods in search of a cow, a red cape, a pair of golden slippers and some magic beans - all necessary to lift the curse that has kept them childless. They meet up with a beguiling cast of characters that will leave you laughing out loud, fighting back tears and, ultimately, transformed by the whole experience. With oft-recorded songs such as Children Will Listen and No One Is Alone, Into The Woods is a music lover's delight from start to finish - and will forever cement Stephen Sondheim's unparalleled position as the giant of the American musical theater.
As conceived by Stephen Sondheim and cocreator James Lapine (following their Pulitzer ... more
Prize-winning Sunday in the Park with George), Into the Woods tells the intricate tale of multiple fairy-tale characters crossing paths in the woods, not merely resolving the characters' dilemmas but also exploring what happens after happily ever after. Sondheim's chamber-scale music, recipient of the 1987 Tony for Best Score, is one of his most beautiful and accessible, and is at its most poignant in "No More", "No One Is Alone" and "Children Will Listen". The original Broadway cast is outstanding top to bottom, most notably Bernadette Peters as a rapping witch and Joanna Gleason, who won a Tony for Best Actress. The CD booklet includes production photos and--so important for a Sondheim show--full lyrics. Fortunately, this cast was also captured on video and DVD. --David Horiuchi

Middleton, so despite its Winnie The Pooh-esque cover art, Into The Woods doesnt disappoint. He may not have fellow Arab Strapper Aiden Moffats characteristic monosyllabic storytelling to deliver lyrics of self-hatred, loneliness or incompetence, but in his own inimitable Scottish burr, the songs are almost as effective; not as dark, but certainly possessing a charm and identity of their own. Kicking off with the amusing "Break My Heart", in which he pleads that hed "rather have you than sing these shit songs", then listing whatll happen if his heart does get broken, over a jaunty backing track that sounds like a ramshackle Belle & Sebastian. The piano and acoustic sound is continued through most of the album, but absent on the album highlight of "No Modest Bear" where the sound is all cheap electronica and "Bear With Me", which is industrial enough to be Depeche Mode. Slightly more accessible and with more of a sing-along factor than your average Arab Strap album, it seems that Middleton has managed to carve out a niche away from his band that proves his all-round talent. --Thom Allott

An interesting tale that weaves and entwines the stories with magic and music. With such acclaimed stage performances by stars such as Bernadette Peters and Robert Westenberg, you get a healthy serving of wonderful singing, light comedy and lessons in life served to you in a two act play.
The first act blends familiar fairy tales with a new story of a baker and his wife who wish more than anything to have a child. However, the baker’s family has a curse on it, laid by the witch who lives next door. Unless they help the witch by collecting the items she needs for a spell, they shall never have a child. Without these items, the witch will stay old and ugly. And so, attempting to collect the items needed (a cow as white as snow, a cape as red as blood, hair as yellow as corn, a slipper as pure as gold) they all find themselves going “into the woods”. They get the slipper from Cinderella, who has managed to go to the ball and capture her prince’s heart. The cow they buy from Jack in exchange for some magic beans. The cape is obtained by freeing Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother from the wolf. They also find out that the baker has a sister, taken at birth by the witch and hidden in a tower. It is from the baker’s sister, Rapunzel, that they manage to get the hair as yellow as corn.
So, Jack climbs the beanstalk and gets all the money he needs. Cinderella marries her prince. Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother are freed from the wolf and she learns her lesson. Rapunzel is set free from her tower and marries her prince charming. And the baker and his wife have the child they have always longed for. On top of that the spell works and the witch is young and beautiful again. But, does getting everything they ever wished for give them the “happily ever after” that they longed for?
This musical takes it a step further in act two. What happens after you get the happy ending? Does it stay happy? Do all of their problems magically disappear? I don’t think so. Cinderella and Rapunzel find that thier princes were raised to be charming, not sincere. Jack find that slaying the giant and getting all of his gold does nothing more than anger the giant’s wife who comes down for revenge. Now the town is being plagued by a giantess who wants revenge for her husband’s death.
One of the reasons I love this musical so much is the music, surprise, surprise. But it’s more than that. I love some of the morals they raise with this performance. Sometimes good isn’t the same as nice. What are the priorities you have in life and what would you do if you got everything you wanted. Now, I can hear many of you out there saying “I don’t think so, I hate musicals” and that’s fine. Musicals are not for everyone. I happen to be a huge fan of musicals. This is in my top ten of all time favorite musicals. But I would strongly recommend that you watch it at least once. Look past the fact that there are singing princes, melodic witches, and musical wolves. Watch this for the great comedy. Watch it for some of the best stage performances I’ve ever seen. Watch it for the great lessons it puts forth. If you can get past the music, you will see what I mean. Then there are people out there for me who will be dancing around the kitchen singing the songs from this show for days after. But for whatever reasons you find, I would say give this one a go at least once.

territory. Alexander also does a great job with the dialogue, any failure in its delivery is down to the actors, some of whom are up to the task, some of whom are just downright too wooden to put any kind of conviction into their roles.
The DVD comes complete with a documentary interview with actor Elijah Wood, a documentary about football violence and how that transferred into the Lexi Alexanders story, a music video, the trailers, and a making of documentary. The extra's are probably far more interesting than the film itself. ...

Project with potentially amusing titles such as The Bel Air Witch Project, The Blair Underwood Project and The Watts Bitch Project. These are interspersed with 'Into the Woods' a series of sketches which, although poor, outshine any of the Blair Witch Project spoofs on the DVD. If you've ever drunkenly pondered making your own spoof horror, then The Bogus Witch Project may well provide you with the inspiration you need to get that old video camera out and crack on with your new project. After all, if this bunch of banal and wearisome Yanks can get paid to create such a diabolical attempt at entertainment, then surely anyone with a video camera an the willingness to make a complete fool of themselves can achieve a modicum of success.
Surely making a mildly amusing spoof horror isn't that difficult. The Scary movie franchise may not be ...
