This is one of those classic films, which can be enjoyed by a wide audience whilst having a cult viewing. I suppose it fits in with the genre. But where does it fit in, I suppose it could be called a Gothic/Horror/Thriller – although it is hardly something you have to watch with the lights on. The film does seem to drag on at times although this was only because I was watching it in drips and drabs from video. I advise you to watch from start to finish to fully appreciate the story. You can watch it more than once, although I would leave a bit of a gap between each viewing.

The story is based on the book of the same title, written by Anne Rice. In my opinion you should enjoy both, but probably read the book first. This way you can see if the characters you pictured in your head match up with the Directors.

The cast is absolutely amazing. Tom Cruise revels in his role as Lestat, enjoying his role as a bad guy. The story begins in modern-day San Francisco, where the Vampire Louis played by Brad Pitt tells his (2nd) life story to the journalist Malloy, played by Christian Slater. Pitt is the lynchpin of the film; he is the narrator and in the present is describing his past, which centres on him.
Two centuries earlier in New Orleans, Louis is at a loose and careless end. His wife and children are dead, and he wishes to join them. Lestat spots him and when he gets him on his own he gives Louis a choice: Will he die or have eternal life, with this Louis is transformed into a vampire.

I will try not to spoil all the secrets but will have to describe certain details so that the story makes sense.

Louis does not want to kill people, instead feeding on rats whilst Lestat positively relishes in the killing. There are a few gory bits in it but that is expected considering the genre. I am not one to shy away from blood so I do not consider it to be excessive, in fact it adds to the film.

After moving about between countries and various decades, Louis feeds on a little girl, whose mother has died from the Plague. Lestat makes the girl, Claudia, a fellow vampire in a similar way to how he changed Louis.
Kirsten Dunst is superb as the sweet but murderous little girl. Louis becomes very attached to her. Later she realises that she will forever remain a girl she becomes very jealous after seeing a fully endowed women, she murders Lestat although it is not that easy, he returns so they kill him again. Life’s tough being dead. She escapes with Louis to France where they finally end their search to find fellow vamps.

They meet a group of vampires who are masquerading as actors. This merry little gang is headed by Armend. Antonio Banderas is another superb choice as he convincingly plays this relatively small part to a T. He orders his gang to capture Louis, Claudia and another women (who Louis was going to make as a companion for Claudia), he tells them to put Louis into a steel coffin whilst the women are burnt to death in a chamber when the sun rises.
Armend frees Louis because he wants him as his own companion. He deliberately planned it knowing that Louis’ rage would get the better of him and he is proven right when he murders the actors. But things are not exactly to plan as Louis leaves and heads back to America alone.

He can once again see the sunrise with the invention of film. The film is now pretty up to date and it flashes back for a last time to the present when his story ends. Slater isn’t happy and asks to become a vamp. With this Pitt leaves unhappy that the moral of his story has not been taken the right way.

There is a final surprise at the end which I won’t reveal – so I guess this is the end of my story.

Until next time…Muhahahahahahahahahaha
