The stranger held the body in his arms, the beating of his victim's heart was slowing, and he knew that death was near. He now bit into his own wrist and offered it to the man, the man responded and grabbed the strangers wrist and drank as he had never drank before, suddenly his spine arched as if gripped in spasm, he uttered a moan and collapsed. Silence once more filled the room.
The stranger rose from the chair and looked out of the window. He surveyed the castle illuminated in the distance and it reminded him of home. `So this is Edinburgh, you have a beautiful city`, he said to the body that was beginning to stir.
The man opened his eyes, he rose and smiled at the stranger. As they were about to leave, the stranger noticed the videocassette lying on the coffee table. `So someone has been telling tales`,
he said. He sat back down and asked his new convert “Clanmac4” to play the video…
In the year of our Lord, Nineteen Hundred and Ninety four we saw a movie of spellbinding quality hit our cinema screens, a film based on the first novel by the author Anne Rice. What gave this film cult status? What indeed, here is my humble opinion.
It would have to be the transformation of the three players in this saga, who by elaborate use of makeup became the most impressive cinematographic vampires to be seen this century. Director Neil Jordan in portraying near female beauty within these men created an intimacy never before experienced in modern Hollywood Cinema. Cruise, Pitt and Banderras, portrayed this centuries most interesting vampires, allowing them to grace our screens with extreme presence. Together they were players in a most impressive, decadent and sumptuous affair, truly manifesting the mood and feel of the period.
The film takes us on a unique journey in detail more akind to the “feelings” of one newly christened vampire his struggle and his eventual ascension into evil than the normal tale of horror. The tale and it is a tale, indeed not a plot in sight, comes in the form of an interview between our journalist “Christian Slater” and Louis “Brad Pitt”, a two hundred year old vampire. The tale starts on the banks of the Mississippi in the 18th Century, it marks the story of Louis, pre “Servant of Darkness” and post. His fight with being a hunter of humans and his disgust at taking their lives. A tale of his relationship with his maker, the deliciously evil vampire Lestat “Tom Cruise” and his “adopted” vampire daughter Claudia and the conflict between them all. This culminating in an insurmountable crescendo of betrayal.
It follows the journey of Louis and Claudia to Europe to find the source of the vampire legend and to find answers to the questions asked by Louis’s tormented soul. It traces his meeting with Armand “Antonio Banderas” and the consequent relationship between them. Louis and Armand, the love angle, yes normally apportioned to the female actor in any major Hollywood, deal. On this occasion the writer decided to give us, something more interesting to get our teeth into! And did she succeed, completely. The scenes between both these men are electric, I was fooled, I wonder what their wives thought! The closing scenes of the movie see Louis back in his homeland and once more traces his life through the decades until now.
The story is magnificent, the acting, Cruise was meant to play Lestat, reading the book before watching the film, Cruise brought the character into life, Pitt is utterly convincing as the troubled vampire fledging, Banderras, a small part but a masterful portrayal.
I have deliberately not given anything away in this opinion, there is a lot more that can be said, but a taster is what is on offer and this is what you get. If you have seen this movie, watch it again. If you have not seen this movie, well your life is incomplete.
