When I picked up Intermission I have to say I didn’t know what to expect. I love Irish films as an Irish man away from home they always make me laugh, but I have to say Intermission was a new breath of fresh air from the days of The Commitments, The Snapper, and The Van.
The opening scene is by far one of the best it is completely unpredicted and for those of you who haven’t seen the film you are in for abit of a shock.
We are first introduced to the character Lehiff (Colin Farrell), a criminal who has a habit of getting into trouble with Detective John Lynch (Colm Meaney) obsessed equally by boxing and Celtic mythology, Meany is just as his name suggests in Intermission.
Detective Lynch is a cop who is seriously confused about his own importance. What adds fuel to this lose cannon is a producer named Ben (Tomás O'Suilleabháin) wants to make a series about the life of a this renegade cop.
The main character of the film is John (Cillian Murphy), an inarticulate young man who has just split from his girlfriend Deirdre (Kelly Macdonald). Working with his best friend Oscar (David Wilmott) at a local supermarket in a job he hates, he stumbles across a plan to avenge himself upon Deirdre.
Deirdre's sister Sally Played by (Shirley Henderson) has not found a man since she was dumped on literally and robbed by her last boyfriend, letting herself go abit by growing a 'Ronnie' for those of you who aren’t from Dublin that’s a female moustache! But then her life changes when Oscar (David Wilmott) falls for her in the last scenes of the film.
The film then revolves around how John wins back Deirdre by getting help from Lehiff played by Farrell. A botched kidnap results in a hilarious turn of events which see Colin Farrell being chased and then shot by Colm Meaney and John and Deirdre getting back together.
Some exceptional performances by Colin Farrell and Colm Meaney in a tightly packed story with a killer soundtrack to match and some hilarious one-liners!
This film is literally a cross between Love Actually and Pulp Fiction, with some Lock Stock and Snatch also for good measure sounds strange but its very true.
The film is hilarious and I would definitely recommend it to any of you reading this who is a fan of any of the last films mentioned or just like Irish humour. Definitely worth picking up!
Rated R for pervasive language, some sexual content and violence. The runtime is 105 minutes.
It can be bought 15 euro but you would be better of renting it from your local video shop.
