Inspector Morse was a British crime drama starring John Thaw as Chief Inspector Morse and Kevin Whately as Detective Sergeant Lewis. It was based on the novels by Colin Dexter. It was set in Oxford and featured the pair investigating murders for Thames Valley CID.
Morse was different from the normal sleuth because, although he was intelligent and mild mannered. He had many failings, such drinking, was sometimes abrupt with people and found relationships difficult to maintain. He also had many enemies especially in the police, who he had annoyed. This made him a believable character that the general public could associate with. Lewis was a bit wet behind the ears and found Morse’s cynical nature quite trying at times. The two juxtaposing men were a perfect partnership and meant that they saw murder cases from different subjective views.
I remember watching this and finding it difficult to watch at times, but once I got into it, it was immensely enjoyable. The condescending and intelligent Morse could almost have been an Oxford Professor instead of his knowledge and demeanour. The two leads were great in their roles and gave life to the characters. John Thaw’s untimely death in real life robbed the producers the chance for making more of this quality drama.
