Inspector Gadget, the cartoon, was about a cop who, for reasons which escape me, had a variety of cybernetic implants which would malfunction at the most inopportune moment. His crime detecting skills were as hit and miss as his implants were, resulting in his niece and her dog coming to the rescue. Inspector Gadget, the movie, is dreadful. No, seriously, it is dreadful. Matthew Broderick, a talented (but overlooked) actor, plays the inspector, who was a rentacop who gets implanted with lots of gizmo's and tries to track down the evil Claw (Rupert Everett, who carries the film with his camp, over acting). Cue plenty of disasterous scenarios as Gadget attempts to get used to his new accessories. Sadly, the film goes nowhere. The script is "yawnsome" at best, pointless the rest of the time. The special effects are typical Disney fodder - they are adequate, if nothing else. Even the cameo by Dabney Coleman (who voiced the cartoon's Chief Quimby (the police chief who would pass information to Gadget, only to be the victim of the self destructing notes)) is totally wasted. The only redeeming feature of this film is the score, with the theme tune of Inspector Gadget getting an amazing orchestral make over.
