Independence Day. Billed as a rather good film, It is a rather good film. There is one simple reason for this. The White House gets blown up. We English did it back in past days (pity we couldn't now), and aliens do it again. A wave of satisfaction washed over me when that happened. Scary huh?
The Characters
The lead player here is Will Smith - general cool guy. He's a top USAF pilot, pushing for a job with NASA, married to a stripper with one kid. We have His Wife (phhwoooaar), the President, his wife, the crop duster (Randy Quaid, shot to fame with National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation -see my op on that), Jeff Goldblum as a random nerd, along with gasping friend and cool dad, and various screaming strippers and ordinary people. Everyone does their job well, no obvious weak links, and a couple of stars (Smith and Quaid). No probs.
If you don't know this you should be shot. We have a happy America, happy world, then some nerd picks up some spacecraft on some equipment. It enters our atmosphere, hovers above major conurbations, then blows the crap out of them. After destroying the world (almost), guess who wins? Starts out well, falters a bit. Not bad.
Special Effects
Rippin. Any films that blows up the White House gets 10/10 full stop. But, as it is, there's lots of other bonuses, like blowing up the initial skyscraper, dog fights, inside the alien mother ship, and the final battle.
Let Downs
One absolutely crap bit of this film is when the President telepathically recieves information on what the aliens plan to do. My God, that was bad. Ruined the film. Also, the fireball in the tunnel was a bit shocking.
Birds
Will Smith's wife is one of the best birds i have ever seen on film. Absolute beast. Thats your lot though. Rest are munters.
Well, Get to the Point Dawson
It is a great film. We studied it for English coursework, 'We'll Wish We Were' is alliteration etc. Nice special effects, passable story, nice bird, good cast - its well worth watching.
