The film that took the world by storm, and blew up the white house, what more needs to be said as an introduction?
By now you must know i'm talking about ID4, Or independence day, the film made record amounts of money, and made people think that will smith might be able to handle a 'real' film role!
If you have never seen ID4 then i really suggest that you rent a copy or borrow it from a friend before you buy it as it is very much a two camp film, you love it, or can't stand it! The story is about earth being attacked by aliens from another planet, yet again America saves the day and without them the world would never have done it (you can't really blame them for this though, they MADE the film and so have full right to make themselves look good, heaven knows they need all the help they can get...)
On may 2nd the people of the world wake up to huge ships closing in on the planet and setting up orbit over the capital cities, these city ships have a mixed effect upon the general populace, some welcome them, others fear them (one even tries to warn the world about what they did when they abducted him) the president of the USA tells the world not to panic...meanwhile a satellite engineer for a TV station finds a repeating signal looping thought the satellites around earth, it is slow degrading itself and will disappear in a few hours....
May 3rd, the signal ends and the aliens attack, they open the bottoms of their ships and fire off huge energy beams that destroy the major cities ( i love this bit, the white house gets blown to heck) the president and a few others escape onboard air force one and head to area 51 where the government have had an alien scout ship for quite a while, the president has plausible deniability, they didn't tell him! once there they order an attack on the city ships, it is found out that the have an energy shield that protects them form harm, and the fighters are set upon by smaller ships that are also shielded (this make for an unfair fight as the earth boys can get killed but the aliens can't) when this fails the president nukes the city ship, this also has little effect....other than destroying the remains of the city
May 4th and our engineer buddy has a plan, the president give a speech that i personally regard as one of the best ever written, and will smith is reviled to like his women 'on the chunky side' (this part is vague as it would ruin the story if i told you) also a crop duster gets his long sought revenge!!
The discs ID4 on region 2 was a two disc special edition, disc one with the two versions of the film on and disc two with the majority of the extras, well where to start?? The film quality is excellent, the picture is crisp and clear ad the sound...whoa, it uses all 6 channels most of the time, rather than once or twice! the two versions are the original theatrical version and the extended spec dish version, the spec dish contains the extra footage that was cut from the film, it fleshes out the story and characters a bit more. Now as for extras, we have been give a lot, an awful lot, there is the original ending with the Bi-plane (what Were they thinking?????) a huge picture gallery, all the promos and trailers, a 30min documentary about what would happen if earth was attack by aliens ect.. there is alot of stuff and most of it is of very high quality, but i buy my DVD's for the film, not the extras....
Love it or hate it, its one you'll remember for along time to come
