If you were ever asked to give an idea of this film, the words Special Effects would crop up many times, usually in the same sentence as 'wow', 'amazing', 'stunning' or 'breathtaking. I must admit that I went to see Independence Day twice at the cinema. It was such an experience, not just because of the film but the fact that it had some of the most spectacular special effects sequences in any film i've ever seen.
The plot, lest it be forgotton, is that aliens have finally come here and despite all our peaceful welcomes they decide that it would be a good idea to destroy Earth. Sounds familar, right? Well, the story is actually based loosely on War of the Worlds and although it shares much of the same ideas, it is a completely modern film in all respects. It's not exactly an intelligent film by any standards, there are so many plot holes and the story is pretty basic at best, but with the level of entertainment on offer it doesn't really matter much.
There are enough famous faces in the film to make any hollywood filmgoer feel at home, Will Smith heads the cast of heroes that try to save the planet as a gung-ho fighter pilot who seems to love nothing more that tearing a piece out of the enemy spacecraft and is not afraid to take them on one on one. Bill Pullman plays a very corny president of the USA, a man to look up to and a born leader (so, not exactly realistic then) and Jeff Goldblum is the reluctant scientist, helping Smith to get right up close and personal with the aliens. Also worth mentioning is the cameo by Brent Spiner (Data in Star Trek TNG) who is really funny as a strange scientist from Area 51.
The picture quality of this disc really does bring out the best in the effects and you haven't seen this film until you've seen it on DVD, it really does make a difference. As for extras, there are enough to keep you busy weeks later! The two documentaries are well presented and give a good insight into the filming of the movie, the hilarious mickey take of the 'real' events surrounding the film have to be watched (such as 'live' news reports) and the special effects piece is a must.
So, as heavy explosions rock your speakers and the screen lights up every minute you'll remain speechless at the whole event and wonder how you ever lived without DVD before. Sit back, switch off your brain, and enjoy!
