I have seen this film several times on the television but this was the first time I actually sat and watched the whole thing. I have to say that I was quite impressed by it. I found the storyline to be good and believable for a fantasy film and I enjoyed the way it was put across on screen.
The characters in the film were all very good and I enjoyed seeing will Smith playing the role of Captain Steven Hiller, he looked great in his uniform and he made the character very believable. I think he worked well with the other actors and he did even bring a bit of humour to the film. In particular I liked the scenes with him and the alien in the desert! Geoff Goldblum played the role of David levinson and he too did a great job and I liked how he was given a back story with his ex-wife and thought that this gave the film a bit of depth. He worked well with the character of his father and they too bought some humour to the film. Other actors in this film included, Bill Pullman as the President and Mary McDonnell as the first Lady. Each of these character all managed to bring something different to the film and all made it that bit better to watch.
The effects in the film were very good and all looked very realistic. I did find the appearance of the Aliens a bit scary at first, especially when one was being cut open and the inside jumped out! They did look good though and not what I would have thought an alien would look like. The effects of the spaceships and the American fighter jets having a battle did look great and I think a lot of time and effort went into the making of these scenes. The music throughout the film was good but nothing amazing. The tracks which were used were appropriate for the paces used and helped with the setting of the scene.
I did find the addition of Brent Spinner to the cast a nice surprise. He played the role of Dr Brackish Okun, he has not been seen in many films since his Star Wars days and I think he did a great job in this film.
My only concern with this film was that I found the ending was very predictable and fro half way through I had worked out just what was going to happen and there was just no surprise to it at all but aside from that then this film really is wroth a watch.
The DVD which I have does have some special features which includes:-
- Main feature includes 8 minutes of restored footage - not included in the theatrical -release, DTS audio and restored picture quality - Audio Commentary by Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin - A sneak preview behind the scenes of The Day After Tomorrow.
I am not a fan of bonus features so I have not watched these so therefore I am unable to comment on whether they are worth a watch or not.
The running time of this film is 147 minutes which I found to be a little long and though that they could have made just as good a film by loosing about 30 of these minutes. The certificate of this film is a 12 as it does contain moderate horror and one use of strong language. I would say that I agree with this certificate but I don’t think there was any horror however moderate, but I did find the appearance of the aliens a bit disturbing at the beginning but saying that I am a bit of a girly with scary things!
We bought out DVD many months ago now and I cannot remember the price we paid but shop at places like Amazon and EBay and you should be able to pick this up for just a few pounds. I am going to recommend this film as it has a good story, great acting and Will Smith looks mighty fine in it!
Advantages: Well Filmed Disadvantages: Wont appeal to everyone
serve them drinks and lobster beside the beach.
The last time the aliens arrived it was a close run thing but, fortunately, the Americans led the world in a united battle against the invaders and we saw them off.
The documentary on that conflict, IndependenceDay, is out on DVD and will show you in glorious detail the arrival of massive alien ships, their unprovoked bid to exterminate mankind and how the good guys eventually prevailed.
It is a terrific piece of film-making that manages to cover the entire struggle from first contact to destruction. In between, we have massive battlescenes involving hundreds of air force planes up against alien fighters, an alien-cam view of the insides of the alien mothership, the intelligence war to crack the enemy codes and the scientific breakthrough that can save Earth.
There are close ...
Advantages: ID4 : a special-effects block-buster. Disadvantages: Just like Marmite - you'll love it or you'll hate it.
I imported IndependenceDay from WWW.DEEPDISCOUNTDVD.COM so I had the US version before it was released on DVD in the UK. I had originally watched ID4 at the cinema and bought it on video when it was released. I am one of the people who absolutely love it - but this opinion is about the facts, you can make you own mind up from the may other "reviews" about this film.
ID4 was a huge box-office hit - with only a 75 million dollar budget it raked in (eventually) 811 million dollars world-wide after huge US hype. It even had it's own advert during the superbowl..!
The 2-disk set gives you the option of watching the original final version or the version with all the extra footage included. The extra footage is about 6 mins but is in chunks of 20 to 30 seconds and seems a lot more. This footage digs deeper into the characters ...
Advantages: Great acting and effects Disadvantages: Obvious computer generated effects
one of the spacecraft crash and he drags it thru the desert to try and find the army base nearby.
The president arrives at Area 51 to see a spacecraft that crash landed decades before. It is being rebuilt. It too has a protective shield.
Captain Hiller is found by the Casse family and they give him a ride to Area 51.
David works out that he can stop the protective shield by giving it a virus, but to do that he has to get it into the mother ship in space.
Captain Hiller volunteers to fly the spacecraft and he and David set off into space.
MY REVIEW
This is the ultimate alien disaster movie. All the action happens on July 4th, IndependanceDay. And the hero in the end turns out to be unlikely person!
The effects are really good in this film although you can see some scenes are very computer generated against a blue screen ...

"...INDEPENDENCE DAY fulfills the promise of the movies: to deliver the audience out of the everyday and into the sensational..." (Sight and Sound, )
"...A rousing state-of-the-art cartoon capped by an aerial-combat climax..." (USA Today, )
"...A spectacularly scaled mix of '50s-style alien invader science fiction, '70s disaster epics and all-season gung-ho military actioners..." (Variety, )
DVD Description
With a 71 million dollar budget and mind-blowing special effects, INDEPENDENCE DAY is a grand, high-tech throwback to such films of the 1950s as THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL and WAR OF THE WORLDS. Here, aliens, in numerous gargantuan spaceships, arrive without warning and hover over the world's most important cities, creating global panic. The nasty visitors use death rays to blow New York, Washington D.C, and Los Angeles to smithereens. A handful of plucky Americans, including the Clinton-esque President, a gung-ho fighter pilot and a computer geek named David, attempt to devise a strategy against the invaders. On July 4th, their risky plan is put into effect, as dozens of fighter pilots (including the President) wage an assault on the spaceships. However, their success (and the fate of the world) depends on David, who is attempting to disarm the aliens's mothership.
