The Incredibles

Lets not get too cheesy and lets avoid using the dreaded adjectives “fantastic,” “amazing,“ and “incredible” to describe Pixar’s latest offering. One thing for sure is this movie has definitely hit the bull’s-eye.

Pixar and Brad Bird had a lot to live up to after the visually spectacular Finding Nemo but they have not let no-one down with their latest offering especially that it was targeting adults and older children rather than the younger kids at the opposite end of the spectrum.

The Incredibles is centred around a family of superheroes that are forced to retire due to the suing culture that has taken over their world. After settling down to a “regular life” in suburbia via a witness protection programme set up by the government Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl have now become the Parrs with three children, Violet being the oldest, Dashiell, and the youngest Jack Jack. Whilst dealing with Violet and Dashiell’s abilities of becoming invisible at will and extreme speed respectively, Mr. Incredible yearns for the good old days of helping people with the abilities he has been given. The complete opposite could be said of his wife, Elastigirl, who has accepted that she’s not allowed to use her powers as a superhero and seems quite happy to raise the children and lead a normal life as possible.
However the glory days are around the corner for the Parrs when they are forced to come out of retirement to save the world from the latest megalomaniac who goes by the name of Syndrome.

Craig T. Nelson who is mostly known for his roles as Steve Freeling in the first two poltergeist movies, Alexander Cullen in The Devil’s Advocate and as Coach Hayden Fox in the U.S. TV comedy Coach, provides the strong voice of Mr. Incredible/Bob Parr. Frozone/Luicus Best is voiced by the very distinctive tones of Samuel L. Jackson and the wonderful Holly Hunter plays the part of Helen Parr/Elasticgirl. The voices, as per usual, are spot on and help bring the characters to life and the animation is, of course, outstanding. You would not expect anything less from the Pixar studios but the most impressive aspect about this movie is the way the story develops.

Firstly there is a sneaky satirical swipe at the aforementioned suing culture that has seemed to have swamped society. You only need to look at the awful adverts on Channel 5 persuading us to claim for something that has happened 20 years ago!!!!!
Then there is reference to struggles that certain adults and families may have to endure. The superheroes being outlawed and having to change their life entirely can be paralleled by ex-army officers struggling to cope with civilian life after a lifetime in the army. Another toil in life that has been touched upon in this film is being stuck in a dead-end job with no prospects or satisfaction. The story also highlights the difficulty of raising children with their school problems and growing pains and dealing with a husband/wife refusing to have a positive outlook in life.
These themes are dealt with very subtlety where adults may be able to recognise these issues that continually add depth to the picture. These do not dictate and drown the film because these, added to the comic book formula of good versus evil, there is something here for everyone. Younger kids, whilst not really comprehending the jokes, will love it for the sheer fact that it is animated. Teenagers will enjoy it because it is very funny and adults will find it very entertaining because not only will it keep children quite for 2 hours but there is a decent storyline to keep it interesting.
With influences of the comic book superheroes such as Spider-Man and X-men 2 with Alien, Italian Job and most notably any James Bond film we have a movie that can only be described as fantastic, amazing and incredible. Whoops!
