Bob Parr, is married to Helen, and between them, they are raising their three children, Dash, Violet, and Jack-Jack. He works the usual mundane office job as an insurance claims adjuster, and is a little bored and fed up with life. No, correction, Bob is very bored, but Bob is not your average guy. Bob has a secret, a deep dark secret, that he shares with his wife and the country's citizen relocation programme department.
Then one day Bob receives a mysterious phone call for help...
The call tells Bob of a world threat from Syndrome, a wannabe ruler, and suddenly Bob is back in business.
Yes, Bob has a secret identity, somewhere in his past, he was a super hero, Mr. Incredible, a crime fighter, a caped crusader (without the cape) and when he tried to rescue a jumper from a high tower, who didn't want to be rescued, he was sued, leading to other super heroes being sued, causing some problems for the Government, and so the Government put the super heroes into a relocation programme, giving them dead end jobs and a rosy little life, away from what they do best, rescuing people.
Bob's wife, Helen, was also a super hero, known as Elastigirl, who seems to adjust to her new life, as a stop at home mum, far better than Bob, who misses the glory and self satisfaction he once had. Bob spends his days in a poky cubicle, working at his job, and yearning for the old days of excitement, when he used to have a waistline, and a job he was proud of. Along with his old super hero buddy, Frozone, Bob listens to police scanners, in order to inject a little excitement into his boring life, occasionally rescuing cats from trees.
Helen starts to wonder what is going on, when Bob starts to lose weight, exercising, receiving secret phone calls and doing odd things. But what she discovers, is not another woman, no, Bob is too devoted to Helen and his family for that. She discovers Bob is once again playing as Mr.Incredible, and once she gets used to the idea, she joins him in his quest to save the world. In fact the kids, and their super powers, hidden until now, also join them. So we end up with a whole family of super heroes, all battling against the evil Syndrome.
I thoroughly enjoyed the robot fight scene. Great stuff. Good for the little kids, and the big kids amongst you. Look out for Brad Bird, as he stars as one of the characters, and does it wonderfully too. I found Edna, Mr. Incredible's costume designer, wonderfully entertaining, and she was easily the best character in the film. I wish there was a film completely about her, I could have watched her for the whole two hours. She was a great creation, a real eccentric designer, full of passion for her job.
The Incredibles, written and directed by Brad Bird is the latest Pixar, Disney offering. You may already have seen Brad's previous work with The Iron Giant, another very nice animation. The Incredibles is set in the 50's, and is two hours of pure fun. The voices include, Jason Lee, Samuel L Jackson, Craig T. Nelson and Holly Hunter. Parents beware, there is some violence in this animated movie, though it is rather low key, and has a PG rating in the UK.
The filming was superb, I liked the facial expressions, the real looking hair, and the costumes. I also liked the fact, that there was a real story going on here, characters with feelings and depth, that you cared about. It was far better than some of the plots in 'real' films. Mixed with the funny humour, and witty dialogue, this film is a winner. This is simply wonderful, and is easily as good as, if not better than, Toy Story.
