To say Harry is fond of In The Night Garden is a little bit of an understatement. The minutes the first notes of the now infamous theme tune (in my house anyway!) he is absolutely hooked, it's actually quite adorable! So I decided I would use one of my Amazon vouchers to treat my son to a DVD of his new favourite TV show, and it was this one, Hello Iggle Piggle, that I chose for him. In the Night Garden is the latest craze for toddler's all over the country, with it being shown on the C-Beebies channel 3 times every day. They are a set of characters who live in the Night Garden, and have lots of fun and games, before going to bed. The show is supposed to settle children down at bed-time and the bed-time scenes help you encourage your child to go to bed like their favourite characters. The characters are Iggle Piggle (the blue one), Upsy Daisy (a ragdoll), Makka Pakka (the small brown one), the Tombliboos (a mad trio of characters), the Pontipines (tiny little people) and the Hahoos (huge inflated things).
This particular DVD is called Hello Iggle Piggle, and features 5 episodes of In The Night Garden. All the characters appear in each
episode, but three of the episodes on this disk are named after Iggle Piggle, so I guess this DVD would be more aimed at fan's of Iggle Piggle. The DVD cover is bright blue, with a large picture of Iggle Piggle in the middle, with the other characters in the background. It is a nice bright DVD and well aimed at children...not so good if you are shopping and they spot it though! * The first episode is called Iggle Piggle's Blanket in Makka Pakk's Ditch. Iggle Piggle's beloved disappears much to Iggle Piggle's upset. He sets about going around the garden to look for it, eventually ending up with Makka Pakka helping him to discover where his precious blanket has been left.
* The second episode is Jumping For Everybody, and probably not one to watch at bedtime! It involves all of the characters starting to jump around the garden, making lots of noises altogether and having lots of fun. Harry starts jumping around the house like a nutty kangaroo when this one is on, its hilarious, so as I said, not the best one for calming children down! * Episode 3 is Iggle Piggle's Mucky Patch. Iggle Piggle is dancing on the bridge when he falls down and gets a mud patch of his tummy, which he also gets on his hands. He spreads the muck to Upsy Daisy, and the two set off on the Ninky Nonk (the magical train in the garden) to find Makka Pakka who can clean them with his sponge.
* The fourth episode is The Pinky Ponk Adventure. The Pinky Ponk is the airship in the garden. Iggle Piggle, Upsy Daisy and the Pontypines all climb aboard the Pinky Ponk, but have a bit of a mishap when it gets stuck in the trees. The inhabitants of the garden all have to work together to free the ship and get themselves to bed. * The final episode on the disk is called Iggle Piggle's Blanket Walks about By Itself, and always has me laughing! Iggle Piggle is walking around the garden when he hangs up his blanket so he can dance properly. But the blanket falls onto Makka Pakka who walks around the garden with the blanket covering him and his Og-Pog (his special bike thing). He eventually blasts it off with his trumpet but the sight of Makka walking around like that is just so funny.
The DVD also has a couple of special features which I think are quite good. Firstly, there is the option to have an audio-commentary on one of the episodes which is narrated by Anne Wood and Andrew Davenport, who created In The Night Garden together. They talk about the ideas and basis behind the show, why certain features appear in the garden and how the show is made. It lasts for the full duration of an epsiode, but I found it interesting to listen to and find out all about the show from the people who know it best! The other special feature is the Nap Time Mode. You turn this on by going to the extras menu, and basically, it starts an episode and allows it to run for its30 minutes, and instead of returning to the main menu at the end, or starting another episode, a screen appears with the In The Night Garden theme song, Iggle Piggle is tucked up with his blanket in his boat leaving a nice peaceful scene, allowing you to get your child to sleep with the aid of the nice music and the image of Iggle PIggle sleeping.
Time To Go To Sleep is the final special feature on the DVD. This allows you to choose a character on a menu on the screen and watch each of them saying goodnight to you and going to bed, another great thing for prompting your child to go to bed with their favourite characters. I have used this a few times, and Harry loves it and sitting waving at them, saying "night piggle"! I got my DVD from Amazon for £8.98, and that is the price all over the internet, but I find prices are higher in the shops. There are also 2 other DVD's in the range, Who's There, and Hello Upsy Daisy, both are available from Amazon. This DVD has a certificate of Uc meaning it is particularly suitable for children and lasts for 140 minutes. It is released by 2Entertain Video and was released in November 2007.
