Advantages: Well acted, great music Disadvantages: Too long
out the story - it has no flow, it just comes across as a list of events. The flashback sequences are, in general, weak and provide no real connection between the audience and the young Charles.
What the film does successfully is really immerse the viewer inRay's world of the 40s and 50s. These scenes have an genuinely authentic feel to them.
The music is good, and for this, if for no other reason, I'm glad I made the effort to watch the film. It contains a mix of tracks spanning a large part of Ray Charles' career; including "Mess Around", "Georgia on my Mind" and "Hit the Road Jack).
As an introduction to the life of an inspiring and talented musician, the film did it's job well. Unfortunately, as a piece of entertainment in it's own right, it didn't cut it for me. At two and a half hours, it manages to be both too long ...

Advantages: Superb performance by Jamie Foxx Disadvantages: Long and dull at times
and his music, and that is a good thing. However, much of the film was dull and monotonous and I really struggled at times not to turn it off. I am so glad that I didn't see it in the cinema - at two and a half hours it really is way too long and although I can imagine that the director wanted to do justice by Ray's life, he did so to the detriment of audience pleasure. I recommend this film if you are interested inRay Charles and his music, or simply want to appreciate Jamie Foxx's fine acting; otherwise, I think you may find the film too tedious unless split up into manageable chunks. Just about recommended.
The DVD is available from play.com for £5.99, but I picked mine up in Asda for just £2.

There is an extended versions of the film which includes several scenes omitted from the theatrical version. I did find that this caused the film not to run as smoothly as the edit version.
