Rose and Maggie Feller are two sisters who are total opposites yet manage to remain very close, and have been ever since they were young. They were made even closer as they only had each other, their mother had died when they were young but they didn’t quite know why or how and it wasn’t talked about. Maggie (Cameron Diaz) is the youngest, and cant ever keep down a job because her inability to read. Instead she turns to alcohol and men, and her life ends up a mess. Rose (Toni Colette) takes pity on her when she’s thrown out of her father and stepmother’s house and allows her to move in to her apartment. However, when a drunken Maggie sleeps with Rose’s boyfriend, Rose is furious and kicks her out. There’s no where to go for Maggie, and she turns to a grandmother who she’s never met. Will this bring purpose to her life? Will Rose or Maggie fall in love? How will things go with the long lost relative? Will the sisters ever make up?
Cameron Diaz as Maggie is mostly believable, and the slightly ditzy wondering blonde is a typical role for Diaz, and she doesn’t seem to have much range in her acting career but whenever she does act she does it well. Throughout the film she seems to wear a lot of very skimpy clothes, such as the scene when she’s in a bikini – this isn’t just pointless though as t is actually a swimming scene. She is one of my favourite actresses, and although I would go and see this film because she was in it, I didn’t think that it was one of her best.
Toni Colette as Rose is also mostly believable but fades into the background beside the quirky and bold Diaz, her wardrobe seems to signify that this is what the director wants, a more sensible and plain character. It was reported that she had to gain 15 pounds for this role, to look less attractive next to Diaz.
The other characters had fairly good acting but there wasn’t anything too amazing and they were only really average.
The film deals with many issues and can be sensitive for some people, these issues include dyslexia, suicide, mental health and death.
This DVD cost me £4.00 from WHSmith in the sale, reduced from £10.00 so I had quite a good saving, and I thought that it was quite good value for the DVD. There are also other good bargains to be had at times in WHSmith.
It was rated as a 12, which is reasonable and the rating that it should be, there wasn’t too much inappropriate material in the film. The rating was because of sex references and the implied sex scene at the start when Cameron Diaz had sex in the toilet at her high school reunion. It should be fine for 12 year olds as long as they are mature enough.
Overall it was quite enjoyable to watch, but it was nothing special and seems like it might be better as a background film. Cameron Diaz’s performance stood out, but the plot seemed a bit vague and pointless.
