A chick flick based on a chick lit. Not the sort of film I would normally go for. My daughter had bought the DVD "In her Shoes" which was advertised as just that. Whilst I wouldn't have chosen this myself, there was little else on television as an alternative and so I put it on. I expected the clichéd romantic comedy but ended up being pleasantly surprised. Yes, it did start off in that predictable vein and did end a little too sentimentally for my preference but the main body of the film had a few unforeseen twists and turns that more that compensated for these little annoyances.
The film is based on the best-selling novel of the same name "In her shoes" by Jennifer Weiner adapted for film by screenwriter Susannah Grant. The screenwriting makes the most of each of the characters in the film bringing them to the forefront in turn, bonding them to each other whilst establishing an attachment with the audience at the same time.
It is a story of two sisters who are extreme opposites in their attitudes and approach to life and relationships. The film opens with an introduction to the two sisters. Maggie played by Cameron Diaz is promiscuous, alcoholic, unemployed, unattached, dyslexic and has no qualms about borrowing other people's property (particularly her sisters amazing collection of shoes). Her sister Rose played by Toni Collette is a complete contrast to her sister. She is prim and proper, a workaholic respectful and responsible lawyer and in a steady relationship.
Things go disastrously wrong between the two sisters when Maggie seduces Rose's boyfriend. Maggie is forced to duly stand on her own two feet (no sister's shoes to borrow). This is where the film slowly gets better and develops an edge.
Maggie discovers that they have a grandmother that did not know existed and heads off to Florida for a good time and free ride. Street-wise grandmother, Ella played by the wonderful Shirley MacLaine is no pushover though. And that is as far as I will go with the synopsis - any further will spoil the film!
Together Diaz, Collette, and MacLaine form a powerful and impressive triumvirate of actresses each bringing their unique merits to the film.
Cameron Diaz plays the stereotypical blond bimbo (a role with which she is more than familiar) but here has a harder, devious, not so endearing and more calculating side. Hey best scenes are those with the old people in the retirement home where a natural affiliation forms. Toni Collette supposedly had to put on 25 pounds for the part (similar to that required for her part in Muriel's wedding) which combined with her long hair drawn severely back successfully portrayed her as austere and sensible. As with Muriel's Wedding, Toni brightens the film with a consistent quality performance carrying the viewer along with her ups and downs. Shirley MacClaine infuses the film with emotional maturity and wisdom taking the limelight from her younger co-stars with ease and charm (the star of the film in my opinion).
The transformation of all three women is what works to make the film. Each acts upon each other to influence them to a new direction. Each of the characters stereotypical facades are gradually peeled away and each does spend time in each other's shoes learning to appreciate themselves and each other.
The supporting characters all play a believable role including Kent Howard as the worried but rather distant father, Candice Azzara as the ever critical, spiteful stepmother and Norman Lloyd as the blind, encouraging and nuturing Prof. But best supporting actress in my opinion has to go to Francine Beers for her role as the feisty and eccentric Mrs. Lefkowitz who adds just the right touch of humour even to the heart wrenching parts of the film.
Director, Curtis Hanson has a reputation for slightly different and challenging films. Here he does not disappoint. The storyline appears conventional with a predictable outcome but Hanson weaves the story together presenting it more as a character study with keen observation on the interplay between the main components. Metaphors including several based on shoes are cleverly presented throughout the film illustrating character traits and changes. Rose has a closet full of stunning and sexy shoes that she never wears. There are broken stilettos, comfy flip flops and sensible walking shoes. Where and how the metaphors fit, I will leave for you to work out.
The film is rated PG-13 for thematic material, language and some sexual content. The opening scene of Maggie having sex in a bathroom at a school re-union (wearing high heels of course) is the worst it gets - so if you are worried about teenagers watching just skip the intro. The film is just over 2 hours in duration .
The soundtack put together by Mark Isham is incidental and does not play a big part in the film. The chosen pieces are appropriate to the scene in which they are played and include such treats as Stupid Girl by Garbage, The theme from Jaws, No Regreats by The Von Bondies and Three little birds by Bob Marley. The closing song, Sonny Bono's song, I Got You Babe, sung by Jamaica's Richard Jah Ace continues notable comic lines in the script. "Why can't I stop being mad at you?" Rose asks Maggie in frustration. "We're a pair like Sonny and Cher," Maggie explains. "They split up!" Rose retorts.
The RRP is about £14 but the film is available from as little as £6 from some major retail stores. It is also available for rent.
"In Her Shoes" is intelligent and absorbing. It does not fit neatly into any traditional genre. I am happy to say that I would not class it as a chick-flit!! It is a romantic comedy instilled with dramatic family tragedy using observational character studies. Tears, laughter and profound thinking are all evoked at one stage or other. Persevere through the introductory scenes and you will be rewarded with an enjoyable couple of hours.
Advantages: A feel good film with bite Disadvantages: Best understood by sisters
...further than the simple story. In Her Shoes is a film that I enjoyed - immensely.
Take two apparently different sisters and tell their story: jealousy, bitchiness, love and loss: all things that survive in abundance in a sibling relationship. That's it. Simplicity itself. Cameron Diaz and Toni Collette are perfect in the roles of the sisters, their interactions really are true to the cause. One is really lead to believe in them as their characters. ... ...may not go down well in some quarters but which I feel is ideally suited to the genre.
Many would bill this film as a comedy. It does have its comedic moments but I would actually bill this as a cross between drama and chick-lit adaptation. That classification probably does the film a disservice and might suggest that blokes won't like it… I beg to differ. It's not a lads movie but it is eminently suitable as a date movie! It's probably not going ...

The final straw comes when Maggie sleeps with Rose's lover in retaliation for being thrown out. With nowhere else to go, Maggie decides to track down her maternal grandmother who has played little part in her grand-daughters' life so far. I think she is well-cast as Rose, who is supposed to be a rather dumpy, boring woman in her thirties - Toni Collette can look good, but, to put it politely, she needs quite a lot of grooming first. However, what really impressed me about her had nothing to do with the way that she looks - I really thought ...

Watching In Her Shoes was a complete surprise for me. I expected a romantic comedy and what I have seen was a good romantic film. It wasn’t a classical predictable romantic film rather a full of twists film that started as a romantic comedy and ended like a drama. This film was base on Jennifer Weiner’s novel In Her Shoes. I haven’t read the book before watching the movie. The screenplay was written by Suzannah Grant. She wrote the screenplay of ... ...L.A. Confidential and 8 Mile. In Her Shoes has a classification of 12 years and over. The original language is English. The running time is 125 minutes. This film was produced in 2005. The plot ---------- This film is about two sisters whom are as different as possible. Maggie (Cameron Diaz) is beautiful, irresponsible, has no job and uses her relatives – especially her elder sister – according to her own interest. She is dyslexic and has difficulties ...

...and allows her to move in to her apartment. However, when a drunken Maggie sleeps with Rose’s boyfriend, Rose is furious and kicks her out. There’s no where to go for Maggie, and she turns to a grandmother who she’s never met. Will this bring purpose to her life? Will Rose or Maggie fall in love? How will things go with the long lost relative? Will the sisters ever make up?
Cameron Diaz as Maggie is mostly believable, and the slightly ditzy wondering ... ...seem to have much range in her acting career but whenever she does act she does it well. Throughout the film she seems to wear a lot of very skimpy clothes, such as the scene when she’s in a bikini – this isn’t just pointless though as t is actually a swimming scene. She is one of my favourite actresses, and although I would go and see this film because she was in it, I didn’t think that it was one of her best. Toni Colette as Rose is also mostly ...

In this screen adaptation of Jennifer Weiner's bestselling novel, Toni Collette (MURIEL'S WEDDING) is Rose Feller, an overweight, overworked, and painfully undersexed lawyer who fills an emotional void with pints of Haagen-Dazs and a closetful of expensive shoes that she never wears. Little sis Maggie (an always radiant Cameron Diaz), who is prone to public drunkenness, one night stands, and wearing lingerie as outerwear, is as lacking in career prospects as her sister is in romantic ones. When her irresponsible behaviour gets her kicked out of her father's house by her spiteful stepmother, Maggie has nowhere to crash but her elder sister's couch. But, after she ignites a series of disasters ranging from the minor to the catastrophic, Maggie is cast out by her angry older sibling, with no job, no money, and no one to take her in. She finds a stash of hidden letters in her father's desk drawer that enable her to track down her estranged grandmother (the wonderfully centred Shirley MacLaine) in a Florida retirement community, hoping to use her impressive skills of manipulation and false charm to financial benefit. While Maggie begins to adapt to life as a nubile young fish in the waters of shuffleboard and wheelchairs, Rose, up in the wintry north, quits her stifling job and begins her own personal transformation. Both women's paths to spiritual growth and self-actualisation might ring false if handled by less nuanced performers and a flashier director, but here they are subtle enough to be both inspiring and realistic. Director Curtis Hanson has proven to be a flexible artist, jumping from genre to genre with the prowess and confidence of those studio directors of Hollywood's Golden Age. With IN HER SHOES, the man behind L.A. CONFIDENTIAL and 8 MILE elevates the chick flick out of that pigeonhole, crafting a story of surprising depth and universal appeal.
