Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix DVD

Advantages: Great casting, acting and directing make this watchable over and over.
Disadvantages: Avid fans of the books will be wondering where half the sub-plots are.....

N.B. Before reading this review, firstly my apologies. I have managed to review a Blu-Ray copy without having watched the Blu-Ray version!!! This review is just the DVD. Either way, please do read on.... The fifh installment of the Harry Potter saga was always going to be the one that left the most out from the book. There's just too much content in the book, with sub-plot after sub-plot after sub-plot to contend with when making the film. So, although die-hard Potter fanatics will be disappointed, it is worth forgetting what isn't in the film, and concentrate what is. The main plot is treated with the right amount of suspense to interest and excite the elder generation while still making it suitable for the younger ones amongst us. Of the few sub-plots that are included, they are cleverly interwoven with the main story, which I ...

P.D. James - Death In Holy Orders / The Murder Room

Advantages: Excellent mystery drama.
Disadvantages: Should get more exposure.

Martin Shaw displays his versatility as an actor in the role of Adam Dalgliesh, bringing dignity and gravitas to this double feature. As in Judge John Deed, he has the ability to grip one as the main character around which the others revolve. A more contemplative persona in this, reflective of his position as a top ranking detective, his character encounters a motley collection of tortured souls in the quest for justice, first in a remote windswept monastery, and then in a stately house that contains a museum called the Murder Room. These atmospheric and absorbing dramas are high on the psychological scale with an air of menace and madness creeping about under the surface. They keep the viewer guessing what will happen next. Thoroughly recommended. ...

Real life detective story - Murder in Greenwich DVD

Advantages: Fascinating case, Fuhrman is a really interesting guy
Disadvantages: Plodding and unconvicing film

without a cinema run. The second reason is that the film is very linear, it's a murder film without any real violence or horror, because that's not what the film is about. So the film in my view falls between being entertainment and a documentary programme, because it's neither. I'd really rather watched this having been made in a documentary style, but because the murder of the girl was real, it is difficult to gain any "enjoyment" from it being a horror film. The DVD has very few extras, just the standard sub-titles and a couple of trailers. I've mentioned in the past in my reviews that I always like extras as I believe that they add some extra depth to the film, and so it's disappointing that there aren't any on this DVD. I suppose however that this is understandable given the low production costs and the intention in making the film a non ...
