I'm also not too sure about the certificate on this film, I would have said it was a 15 because there wasn't much in the film that I would consider I couldn't watch, for me and 18 has to be very, very gory and things like that but I think this film was wrongly certified.

Bit of a shorter review than usual. I couldn't think of many things to say about it to be honest.
I have heard a lot of times now, that this film is a 'hidden gem' it's one of those films that you must see even though it may or may not have got the publicity it deserved. I being the film buff that I am, found it was imperative that I make sure I watch this film so I could make my own assumptions, so I brought it off Amazon for a reasonable price and lay down on my couch last night with my headphones on and the film started on my laptop, the film started at 7.30pm, If I didn't know any better the film ended 8 hours later, but I'll get into that little comment later. Firstly here is the plot.
The Plot
The film follows 2 Irish hit men, Ken and Ray. Ray is a very young hit man and his first job goes terribly wrong and the bullet which was intended for someone also hit a young boy. After this mistake, Ray and Ken are sent to Bruges by their boss Harry who will give them word on what to do, but it's their job to enjoy the city for a little bit.
The next part of the film includes them sightseeing and finding more things so they can make more stupid and boring laughs.
My Opinion
I laugh at anything, this is very true, however this 'black comedy' is not even what I consider to be a comedy let alone a black comedy, I didn't laugh once, I know it's just a film, but some of the comments made me think, well that's just a little below the belt to even laugh at.
What I am shocked at, is when looking at previous rates on this site of this film, there only seems to be a small handful of people who think the same as me, but the rest of them have given 5 stars and praised the ground this film walks on, but I just can't see what they saw at all, never have I been so bored watching a film before, well I have but this is in the same league.
I'm also not too sure about the certificate on this film, I would have said it was a 15 because there wasn't much in the film that I would consider I couldn't watch, for me and 18 has to be very, very gory and things like that but I think this film was wrongly certified.
The Cast
There is only one cast member that I thought did a very good job within this film and that is Brendan Gleesan whose acting was brilliant and he was enjoyable to watch, but the rest of them ruined the film for me, Colin Farrell who does come across cute and vulnerable in places, acts like he's completely high on drugs and booze, and you sit through the whole film going, what the hell. The final cast member who is not really worth mentioning but it might be the reason some people watch this, is Ralph Fiennes who is just crap and awful, his voice annoyed me, and it just came across stupid as hell.
Negatives
Colin Farrell was awful, when I watched him on Jonathan Ross I believe before his suspension I fell in love, he was cute, charming and smart as hell and I hadn't really seen any films with Farrell in before, so I didn't know what to expect, but in this film, despite the fact that he is one of the most emotive actors I have ever seen, and by that I mean you can see everything he's feeling in his face, he went through the whole film and I hate to say it because he said he was totally sober, but he went through the whole film like he was high or pissed out of his mind, this ruined the performance for me.
Other negatives include the fact that like I said at the start the film started at 7.30pm and what I thought was an hour later, I looked at the clock and it had only been 20 minutes, the film dragged on for what seemed hours, I have never sat through what is considered a short film and been so bored out of my mind before.
I mean this in the nicest way possible, but WHAT THE HELL was Ralph Finnes doing in this film, this man can act and his character was the biggest, dumbest idiotic character there is, and his voice throughout, it sounded like a very dumb and a very simple man was talking and it really just got on my nerves by the end of the film.
Should You Buy The Film?
You can buy it from me if you like, just joking, but mine is going straight on EBay with their new bloody free postage, but please don't take my word as gold especially with this film, it is one of those films that you either love or hate, no real inbetween, for me I hated it, but there are so many other people that adore it.
Advantages: Imaginative story, fantastic dialogue - will make you both laugh and cry! Disadvantages: A bit of a dark film for some - will not cheer you up!
In Bruges I had heard this film talked about plenty in the last few months, but haven't had a chance to rent it yet. Then it came on Sky Anytime and I got the chance to see what everyone was raving about... I am a big fan of Pulp Fiction and Tarantino films and whilst the violence is not on this level, there are similarities with depicting atrocities against a background of quick witted dialogue and matter of fact delivery of lines. 'In Bruges' though ... ...been sent to hide out in Bruges, after a hit went wrong. They are instructed to go to a hotel and wait there for further instructions. The elder of the two, is reasonable content to do this and take in a little of the local culture. The younger (Colin Farrell) is not. He can't understand why they have to go go to this place and wants to return home to hide out until the dust settles. Whilst they are in Bruges there are flashbacks to what went wrong ...

"It's in Belgium."
The above is part of the opening voice over of this rather strange little film - so if you're at all offended, this is definitely NOT the movie for you: oodles of swearing, about as un-politically correct as possible, and subject matter including murder, sex, drugs and midgets. I mean dwarfs!
Personally, none of that bothered me - it's all done with such humour, and is so equally offensive across a rather wide spectrum, ... ...Certainly not something rather deep in part, something with a fair amount of emotion and explorations of the human psyche. Just when you think you've seen every possible variation on the hit-man genre, Irish playwright Martin McDonagh in his feature debut has fashioned an audacious combination of Old World grace and modern ultraviolence (Hollywood Reporter, 11/02/2008)
DVD Description
Playwright Martin McDonagh makes an impressive feature film debut as the writer and director of this tragicomedy that is as rich, dark, and complex as Belgian chocolate. The story unfolds over the course of a few days, as Irish hitmen Ken (the appealingly bear-like Brendon Gleeson, KINGDOM OF HEAVEN) and Ray (Colin Farrell, MIAMI VICE, in a loose and sympathetic performance) are ordered to lay low in the tourist-laden town of Bruges, Belgium, after a bungled shooting. Their only directive is to stay grounded and wait for further orders from crime boss Harry (Ralph Fiennes, THE CONSTANT GARDENER, gleefully playing evil), but both underlings--nervous and delightfully talky--chafe with the waiting. The childlike Ray is inconsolably agitated and withdrawn, and after a time we learn that his restlessness is borne of something deeper and more disturbing than mere ADD. The more paternal and patient of the duo, Ken, takes the opportunity to enjoy Bruges's lush, buttressed beauty, but he, too, undergoes some soul-searching by the movie's end. The plot snakes cleverly (and at times touchingly) around flashbacks of the murder as the garrulous killers philosophise and interact with locals and tourists, including an acerbic American dwarf, the owner of the B and B, Dutch prostitutes, and a local enchantress. McDonagh's absurdist black humour asserts itself as hilarious dialogue and dreamlike visuals (supported by Carter Burwell's unsettling score) that shift seamlessly from sweet to grotesque, like a Grimm's fairytale come to the big screen. McDonagh's command of the film medium, which he first demonstrated with the Oscar-winning short film SIX SHOOTER, puts to rest any reservations about playwrights-turned-directors. Viewers will enjoy the crackling banter, vibrant performances, and beautiful scenery.
