Imperial War Museum - Shipyards And Docks At War (DVD)

A really interesting and fun war museum!

Advantages: Interesting, free, fun, good for children
Disadvantages: You might never visit it!

I went to the Imperial War Museum North in Manchester just to pass a couple of hours while we happened to be in Manchester as we were going to watch Manchester United vs. Aston Villa at Old Trafford (what a great match that was!) On the second floor there are all the various exhibitions are and there are two rooms one for the main exhibition and one for special exhibitions which are not always there. Every hour in the Main Exhibition there is the award winning Big Picture show which shows different parts of the War and there are 3 different shows which last between about 12-20 minutes. These shows are projected onto the walls and there are various sounds and music going on and it really is brilliant! I think that this Museum is really good and is well worth a visit. Advantages: range of exhibits, for all ages, free
Disadvantages: some lack of information

Beginning to assess how good a museum might be is determined in the most part by the reasons why one might wish to go there. So, the Imperial War Museum... Importantly to point out is the fact that this museum is focused upon warfare during the 20th century. If you are interested in the artefacts of war then this museum will be of great interest. The main hall of the building houses original examples of tanks, personel carriers, mini-submarines, small boats and assorted weaponry. There are also several fighter planes suspended above. The open-plan nature of this section allows one to come close to these machines of war and to feel their presence and size. In other areas of the museum there are sections of larger planes, and a mock section of a submarine which allow for a more 'hands on' approach. These prove very popular ...

The Imperial War Museum is an enjoyable and thought provoking museum which in recent years has added several excellent new permanent exhibitions. Several displays in the basement break away from dull historical narrative and take a thematic look at the horrors of the two World Wars. They bring home what it actually felt like to live through a war from many different points of view. You can tramp through the misery and discomforts of a trench from World War I. You can relive the Blitz of 1940-41 among a street scene littered with the rubble of collapsed and burnt out buildings, complete with the acrid smells of charred wood and the sound of air-raid sirens.
