A performance of Rossini's opera performed by the Zurich Opera House Chorus and Orchestra and the Supernumerary Association; conducted by Franz Welser-Most.
"Sparkling" is the adjective most often applied to Rossini's comedies when they work-- ... more
fortunately this recording glitters like a diamond in the light. Chailly understands instinctively how to pace the witty absurdities so that you don't have too much time to dwell on how silly the whole thing is--and in this way draws some wonderfully well-judged performances from his cast. Cecilia Bartoli is wonderful as the capricious Donna Fiorilla, never overplaying her but finding just the right tone of brainless pertness-- and she even manages to make her final repentance quite touching. Laura Polverelli as the gipsy Zaida is wonderfully spiteful when occasion demands (the moment when she and Donna Fiorella realise that they are rivals is hilarious). The men too play their buffo parts with enjoyable buffoonery, especially Alessandro Corbelli as the cowardly Don Geronio. And the whole house of cards is underpinned with some crack ensemble playing from the Scala Orchestra. --Warwick Thompson

Il Postino (1994)
Director: Michael Radford
Stars: Philippe Noiret, Massimo Troisi, Maria Grazia Cucinotta
Not to be confused with the wholly inferior Kevin Costner vehicle with the same name (Il Postino means "The Postman" - US title), this charming Italian language film won an Academy Award for Original Music Score and was nominated for five other awards including Best Director, Best Actor (Massimo Troisi) and Best Picture.
The film is based on an adaptation of a Spanish language novel, Ardiente Paciencia by Antonio Skarmeta and is based partly on real life events that happened to the 1971 Nobel Prize for Literature winning poet, Pablo Neruda. Neruda (1904-1973), known as el poeta del amor (the poet of love), famed for his beautiful love poetry, and was also famous for his political poetry and activism ...

Advantages: Fun and lively comic opera sung in English Disadvantages: Not in the original language
The Barber of Seville, Il barbiere di Siviglia is a comic opera full of vitality and fun. Composed by Gioachino Rossiniin 1816, it is his most popular opera. Originally entitled Almaviva after the character from the play.
The CD released by the label, Chandos as part of its Opera in English Series, on 21st February 2000 presents the opera in full recorded on 2 discs. The CD is available from most good music stores for the price of £17.99. The Opera in English series was launched in 1995 in collaboration with the Peter Moores? Foundation?s believe that "to enjoy opera to the full, there must be no language barrier?.
Rossini wrote the opera as a commission for the manager of the Argentina Theatre, Rome where it was first preformed in the February of 1816.
The libretto was written by Cesare Sterbini based upon Beaumarchais' play ...
Advantages: Stunning voices, great atmosphere, brilliant songs Disadvantages: perhaps there could have been more tracks
This live performance was filmed in Spain at Teatro Romanao De Merida and followed the globally successful album 'Ancora'. The DVD is part concert and part documentary with a couple of videos 'Regresa a Mi and the wonderful 'Mamma' thrown in as well.
Il Divo comprise of four singers, a baritone (Carlos), two tenors (Urs and David) and a vox populi (Steven). Together they blend perfectly to make magical music. They have been dubbed 'popera' but that is unfair in my opinion even if they have through their unique talents helped popuarise opera. To bring a much derided genre of music to the masses can only be a good thing and I speak as someone who enjoys music from classical to metal. A true music lover will have eclectic tastes.
The live performance features 5 tracks 'Si Tu Me Amas', 'Isabel', 'O Holy Night ...
