Idomeneo, King of Crete, has been away from home during the long years of the Trojan War. ... more
Idamante, his son and now regent of the island, waits for his return, heralded by the arrival in Crete of Trojan prisoners. One of these prisoners is Ilia, daughter of the murdered King Priam of Troy. Idamante has fallen in love with Ilia, but is loved by Electra, daughter of the Greek King Agamemnon, who has taken refuge in Crete. This production marked the operatic debut of Trevor Nunn. It has been much-acclaimed for its dramatic effect, blending Minoan Crete with the ritualistic delicacy of Japanese theatre. This dynamic stylisation is appropriately reflected in John Napier's considered and elegant designs. Bernard Haitink conducts the London Philharmonic in a forceful account of the music.

Advantages: Brilliant staging, brilliant music, whole cast esp Anja Harteros Disadvantages: Bipolar Idamante.... the dude can use some sedatives
characterful conducting from the pit with his Camerata Salzburg. The pace is on the brisk side but no nuance is lost. The Salzburger Bachchor also sing AND act well in all 9 choruses. Guenther Groissboeck provides a beautifully sonorous voice 'La Voce' toward the end... possibly the voice of Zeus over-ruling Nettuno's wishes.
All in all, it is a truly first class production of the opera both theatrically and musically. The set contains 2 DVDs, with extras of 'Making of' documentary and clips from Peter Sellars' Mozart opera productions and from other M22 project opera on the 2nd DVD. Booklet contains tracks list and synopsis (but no libretto).
If you are looking to buy only 1 DVD of Idomeneo, this is the top choice, bar none. It blows all existing competitions out of the water. ...
Advantages: Excellent performances in a perfect setting Disadvantages: Very minor quibbles
's employment really did happen!
By 1778, Mozart's composition style had developed to the point where his violin sonatas are much more of an equal partnership between violin and keyboard. During this year while he was in Mannheim and Paris, he composed a set of 6 sonatas which are featured on this DVD. They were dedicated to the German aristrocrat Maria Elisabeth, Electress of the Palatinate, but most importantly for Mozart, they were also published in Paris - his first major music publication.
This was a vital step for Mozart. Not only was it a good source of income to have the works published, but it also served to spread his music around a much wider audience than would otherwise have been possible. So these works, while perhaps not the most widely known amongst the general public, are a vital stepping stone in Mozart's development ...
Advantages: Origami-like sets, costumes, bold basic colors; Mozart's music, all sung beautifully. Disadvantages: Un-PC elements may cause unease in modern audiences.
Opera-haters may just succumb to the charms of this delightful stage version of 'The Magic Flute', Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's popular opera. Created in that highly disciplined world of specialized vocal and instrumental music and theatre, it remains among the lightest in the genre. The story amounts to little more than a children's tale with the usual elements of heroism, love, revenge, forgiveness, etc. Ah, but the most aurally pleasing music of Mozart elevates it to a higher plane.
From Arthaus Musik DVD comes this modern, minimalist and playful production of Mozart's final operatic work, 'The Magic Flute / Die Zauberflöte', perfomed live on 26 August 1992 at the Ludwigsburger Schloßfestspiele.
