I’ve just returned from a holiday in South Africa. Our journey out was in two long stretches, first to Doha, then from there to Johannesburg. Luckily, the plane did offer decent in-flight entertainment, and a few movies. I’d seen most of the films available already, but Ice Age was among those I’d not yet seen. You’ll notice this is not my typical film, but I am going to give it a go at reviewing anyway!
Story
Well, you’ll never guess when this film is set! That’s right, in the Ice Age! Well, this first film is set right at the start. All the animals are migrating to better ground, except for a mammoth called Manfred or Manny, who seems to be going the wrong way. He then meets with a sloth called Sid, who is having a confrontation with two angry rhinos, and helps him out. Unfortunately, he didn’t bank on Sid then deciding to make him his personal bodyguard and follow him around everywhere! Then the two find a baby, that a sabre-toothed tiger, called Diego is trying to claim as his own, and they decide to return the baby to its people, with the tiger guiding them. But can they trust Diego?
I love the way this film mixes in all the different animals that surely would never work together. The idea of them looking after a baby was a bit weird but I suppose you do hear about animals adopting babies of other species, and there was the story of Mowgli too. I’m not a baby person but I think for children it must be nice to see animals getting gooey over the baby.
The story is also peppered with appearances from a rat-squirrel-like creature, called Scrat, trying to bury his precious acorn for the winter. Scrat gets into hilarious disaster situations each time, almost losing the acorn and risking his life just to hold on to it. Perhaps there is a moral to all this but for me it was just very funny. The storyline about the baby may also have some meaning or moral behind it about helping out strangers and the different animals coming together may have something to do with accepting people’s differences, though I’m not sure that many people watching would take any notice. Personally I was just enjoying the film.
Graphics
The characters look computerised in an artistic way, and made more like cartoons than realistic creatures. This does make them seem less real or animal-like, and somehow I prefer this as then it is more convincing that they could be cute rather than scary! There is some emphasis on the things that distinguish the character as a certain animal, like the teeth on Diego and the Manny’s trunk and tusks. Also the characters all have very amusing expressions drawn on them that make them more individual, especially with Scrat, who has to be the favourite for me! The rest of the detail is left out, to keep the characters nice and simple. The background graphics are pretty impressive and slightly more realistic without spoiling the overall picture.
Voiceovers
Manny’s voice sounded very familiar to me, and turned out to be Ray Romano, as I guessed, and recognised from his famous show “Everybody Loves Raymond”. It was an unusual choice of voice for a mammoth that you might rather expect to have a very deep and powerful voice. To be honest I did find it a bit hard to believe his character because of the voice, but it was at least original and sort of cute.
The other creatures’ voices didn’t really stand out to me very much, probably because unlike the mammoth, they had the sorts of voices you might expect. Sid the sloth, played by John Leguizamo, had a more humorous and tone and lisp to his voice. Scrat barely spoke, and rather made lots of struggling noises as he moved the acorn about that somehow added to his funny characteristics. Diego, played by Denis Leary, and the other tigers sounded rather calm, cool and collected for most of the time, in that sort of way you’d expect the bad guys to sound anyway. It might have been interesting for all the animals to have unlikely voices, but then like with the mammoth it would probably have just made it all a bit too weird for my liking.
Classification
The film is classified as a PG. I didn’t feel that there was anything in this film to stop small children from watching it, because even where bad things happen, like death or fighting, it is not so much out of evil as typical animal behaviour and is not made to look scary or gruesome. I don’t think any real injury is shown, to keep the whole film light-hearted and easy on the eye.
Conclusion
I’d heard about this film when it came out but was not that interested in seeing it back then. A lot of people were making negative comments about all these animated films coming out and being the same old thing with different animals. Actually I think this is a clever way to learn some basic things about pre-history that might even enhance a child’s interest. As well as this, it really is quite funny, especially the squirrel bits. These days, you don’t have to be a child to enjoy animated films, and I think this is the sort of film anyone of any age can watch. If it comes on telly, you might as well give it a go, but to be honest I wouldn’t bother too much with buying or renting it as I’m not sure after you’ve seen it once you’ll want to see it again. Unless, of course, you are a big fan of animated movies already.

...haven't, you'll have heard of Ice Age. It's the animated children's comedy from a few years ago, set in the chilly world of - yep, you've guessed it - the ice age. It went on to spawn a sequel, Ice Age 2: The Meltdown, which was released last year, but the general consensus was that it's not as good as the original. It must be pretty bad then.

Saying that, there were still a few scenes in this film that I found quite funny. Ray Romano's grumpy voicing of Manni was a treat; he had plenty of pithy one-liners, and prevented it all from becoming too unbearably happy. There were also some entertaining set-pieces, including the bit with the dodos and their three melons (again, an ...

Advantages: A great family film with plenty of giggles for all. Disadvantages: None!
, my little girl is 5 yrs old and when the baddies were on screen she said she was a little bit scared?.but then she's a bit of a wimp LOL.
It is a film which is about endurance and shows that if you work well together then you may be able to achieve anything you want to. The actual storyline works well and is exciting all the way if a tad predictable in places, you can kind of see things coming but that doesn't detract from the feel good factor and the kids in the audience left the theatre excited and talking for ages about it.
My children had seen the first IceAge film previously but I hadn't (their Gran had bought them the dvd one Christmas and it is at her house for whenever they visit) but I was still able to follow the story with no problem even though I didn't really know the characters so it would be ok as a stand alone film ...
brilliant, brilliant brilliant. after having to watch iceage 1 (dare i say by the 25 yr old boyfriend and his friends of the same age) i was hooked on iceage and eargerly waited on iceage, prompting me to take my daughter to the pictures to watch it (it really was an excuse for me to watch it).
we go back to Scrat at the very start still chasing his very much loved acorn what a brilliant way to start the film, and what we could expect all the way through. Manny the mammoth, Sid the Sloth and Diego the sabre-tooth cat are back again, this time to reach a "boat" which will save all the animals from the ice melting and flooding there ground. Manny thinks hes the only mammoth left until he meets Ellie. Problem is Ellie thinks shes a possum, with her younger brothers Crash and Eddie, they are particulary funny especially when one ...
Advantages: Great sequel with genius moments- Check out the midget sloths! Disadvantages: Seemed to go too quickly.
Im a big kid at heart and absolutely adored the first IceAge movie, in fact I saw it several times in the cinema. When I heard they were making a sequel my first comment was "I have to see it" I had no idea what the film would be about but I simply had to see it, naturally there was a risk of being dissapointed but I was willing to take that risk. Sadly I missed it when it was released in the cinema(was busy having a baby at the time) and so had to wait until it was released on DVD, finally I have a copy in possesion and im not dissapointed.

A star-studded cast provides the voices for the prehistoric creatures in this computer-animated feature set 20,000 years ago as the Ice Age approaches. Seemingly antisocial Manny, a woolly mammoth (voiced by Ray Romano), acts as if he just wants to be left alone. When he meets Sid (voiced by John Leguizamo), a sloth, the two become unlikely traveling companions. The plot thickens when the duo finds a human infant and decides to try to return the child to its herd. Manny slowly but surely reveals his heart of gold, while Sid continues to provide comic relief. Diego (voiced by Denis Leary), a saber-toothed tiger with ulterior motives, soon joins them in their search for the humans. Ultimately, this group of misfits becomes its own herd, learning about friendship and loyalty as they brave snow, ice, freezing temperatures, predators, hail, and even boiling lava pits. All the while, a snaggle-toothed squirrel, Scat, provides comic relief as he valiantly struggles with an acorn. A well-written, humorous script and endearing characters mesh well with the state-of-the-art technology and effects. Other stars lending their voices to the feature include Goran Visnjic, Jack Black, and Jane Krakowski.
