For anybody who has seen the charming Ice Age, will no doubt have had their hearts warmed by the antics of Manny the wooly mammoth, Sid the sloth, Scrat the ice age squirrel and Diego the sabre toothed tiger. So when the sequel was released, seeing it was an absolute must.
Ice Age 2 - The Meltdown
**Synopsis**
This time around Sid, Manny and Diego are living in a world where the ice age is coming to an end and all of the Ice is melting. Our three heroes though, don't yet realize this and all of the ice age creatures happily enjoy the new phenomenon, whilst being totally oblivious to the dangers lurking within the melting ice. All of the ice that surrounds their valley has melted and a thick rim of ice is all that stands in the way of an enormous flood, which would fill the valley with water and wipe out all of the creature's that live there.
Within the ice itself are all manor of vicious predator creatures frozen in time, just waiting to be thawed out and feed on anything they can sink their teeth into. Eventually, it becomes clear to our heroes and all of the creatures within the valley, that they must travel to high ground where a huge 'Noah's Ark' awaits their safety. Along the way they must face a whole manor of perils and dangers in order to reach the safety of the Ark. Underneath this rescue mission of a story lies the three interwoven stories of our main cast.
Manny, believes he is the last mammoth left on earth until he finds another female mammoth along the way. Trouble is, this female mammoth named Ellie, has been raised by a family of possums since she was orphaned as a youngster and refuses to believe that she is a mammoth to the dismay of poor Manny. Sid, however, is simply trying to gain the respect of his fellow voyagers as he believes he is responsible for creating their friendship in the first place and respect, seeing as Sid is so useless at almost everything, is hard to come by. Diego's story is that, although brave and fearless, he now discovers with the melting ice that he is, after all afraid of something, the water. Diego can't swim and is terrified every time he so much as puts his paw in a pool of liquid, a phobia he must rid himself of in the thrilling finale.
And finally, a special mention must go to Scrat, who, doesn't so much as have a story of his own but simply carries on from his quest of collecting acorns in the first film. As in the first film, every time Scrat attempts to collect one of his beloved acorns, he is disastrously stopped in his tracks with hilarious consequences but it never seems to deter him from making another attempt.
**Cast**
The cast of Ice Age 2 is wonderfully balanced, all three of the main characters from the first film Manny, Sid and Diego are voiced by the same three actors. Ray Romano from the TV series 'Everybody loves Raymond' is simply excellent as the lonely Manny and he brings a certain vulnerability to the character.
John Leguizamo of countless Hollywood movies such as Super Mario Brothers, Spawn, Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge, is hilarious as the totally useless but extremely charming Sid the sloth. His comical lishp as he speaks just adds even more humour to an already amusing character.
Denis Leary, from Judgement Night, Small Soldiers and TV's Rescue Me simply plays his own real life self, straight laced but with a dry sarcastic humour that kind of balances out Sid's more slapstick antics.
The new characters to the Ice Age franchise is Ellie the female mammoth voiced by Queen Latifah from The Bone Collector and Beauty Shop is an amusing one at that, despite her enormous size she refuses to believe that she is in fact, a mammoth, choosing instead to believe she is a tiny possum, even to the extreme of trying hopelessly to sleep upside down hanging from the branches of a tree. Her two brothers (both real possums) Crash and Eddie are voiced by Josh Peck from TV's Drake and Josh and Sean William Scott, Stiffler from the American Pie movies. These are two extremely mischievous critters who consistently bug Manny for making unwanted advances towards their 'sister' Ellie.
And finally Scrat, although he doesn't have a voice as such, his hilarious screams and squeaks are voiced perfectly by Ice Age creator Chris Wedge, who gives this little sabre toothed squirrel so much personality with a few mere sound effects that he almost carries the entire film on his own.
**Animation and Sound**
The animation in Ice Age 2 is totally fantastic, the water looks so real you can almost touch it whilst the animals and scenery are done more to the Warner Brothers Loony Tunes style of animation to maximize the comedic effect. The film is bright and colourful and the characters themselves are just unforgettable. The sound effects and music are done with such finesse, that you could almost close your eyes and still enjoy the experience. The sound effects are so realistically done and the music is perfectly balanced to carry the films believability values. It really is great to watch an animation film where so much effort has gone into its production and it really shows in the final cut.
**DVD Presentation**
The DVD itself is presented in superb style, what from the animated menu systems, which are constantly on the go to hold the kids attention in the right place, to the whole ease of use to navigate through the menu choices.
There is a wonderful five minute short movie featuring Scrat in his quest for his beloved acorns titled 'No time for nuts' in which Scrat stumbles upon a time machine. This zapps him through different times and places and every time he just about finds his acorns, he is zapped somewhere else, it's extremely funny stuff.
There are sing alongs for the kids to test out their future Fame Academy skills and a chance to help Crash and Eddie perform various stunts. There's deleted scenes from the film, story boards to look at and a game zone in which you can take part in various quizzes and interactive games.
There's even a sound effects laboratory where you can change the noises made in different parts of the film to some really humorous effect. You can choose to have an audio commentary run alongside the film with the filmmakers and actors explaining different parts of the films progress through out the movie. And finally there's a Lee Ryan music video of his theme song to Ice Age 2.
**Overall Impressions**
Ice Age 2 - The Meltdown is one of the most charming movies I have watched in years, it is hilariously funny at all the right moments but it has some real substance at its core as well. The characters are all great, from the clumsy and oafish to the warm hearted and vulnerable, there is someone here for everyone to fall in love with. And of course, who couldn't love Scrat? His acorn chasing antics are reminiscent of the old Wiley Cayote and Road Runner cartoons from the 70's and provide enough laugh out loud moments on their own to make the film enjoyable.
The dry sarcasm between Manny and the herd is great not just for children but there are a lot of subtle in jokes aimed solely at adults as well. So there really is something for everyone in here. The storyline itself is simplistic and enjoyable and it quite literally lets the characters carry proceedings throughout. It has a warm heart at the center but never lets oversentimentality get a hold as tends to happen in so many Disney movies of this type.
The DVD itself was jam packed with hours of enjoyable activities for kids and grown ups alike and I have to say it is one of the best value for money DVD's I have ever bought.
Overall, a charming and amusing family film that will definitely take some beating in terms of enjoyment and value for money, One of the must see movies of modern times. I absolutely loved it and I think you will too.

The first Ice Age was a fantastic movie and it was going to take quite a feat for a sequel for the second movie to draw close to it. I believe Ice Age 2 has achieved that.

...one, or two, but three Ice Age films! I love to watch things in sequence, so of course this was next on my list. By now we were flying from Doha to Jo’Burg, and to be honest after 6 hours plodding around in 30 degree heat, I was a bit tired. The film stars Manny, Sid, Diego and Scrat who were all in the first one. At the beginning of the film we again see Scrat who is still chasing his acorn, as he is trying to get hold of it the ice breaks and water starts coming through. Below where this is happening is a massive adventure area where Sid the Sloth has started up his own child care place. Manny and Diego bump into another of the animals who is warning ... ...on the to of the ice cliff and about to jump as no one thinks he is every any good at things so he wants to prove himself by being the first down the biggest water slide. Manny and Diego go up to rescue Sid but as they reach to top they look behind themselves and see that the ice is actually melting and that the dam will not hold for much longer. As they talk Sid into coming down the cliff they have a fall and we see all 3 of the animals go down ...

The Ice Age is coming to a close and Manny the mammoth, Sid the Sloth and Diego the sabre-tooth cat are relaxing in their valley home; a paradise of waterfalls and geysers. But as the ice recedes, they realise their habitat is threatened by a huge flood. A massive ice dam at the end of the valley is about to burst. So they must convince everyone to head for higher ground and escape themselves. But can they escape the rising water and the monsters ... ...than at them. The melting ice allows for a greater range of environments. The backgrounds are superb with almost photo-realistic elements in some of them, whether it's glaciers, rocks or trees. The ice is so convincing you could get cold just looking at it and the water moves in the right way. The eventual slow-motion dam collapse is a sight to behold.

...brilliant, brilliant brilliant. after having to watch iceage 1 (dare i say by the 25 yr old boyfriend and his friends of the same age) i was hooked on iceage and eargerly waited on iceage, prompting me to take my daughter to the pictures to watch it (it really was an excuse for me to watch it).
we go back to Scrat at the very start still chasing his very much loved acorn what a brilliant way to start the film, and what we could expect all the way through. Manny the mammoth, Sid the Sloth and Diego the sabre-tooth cat are back again, this time to reach a "boat" which will save all the animals from the ice melting and flooding there ground. ...For a box set this is the best value for money ever released. not only does it contain fun filled laughs for the whole of the family but has a story line that will have you in tears of laughter. the first film contains the begining of the "herd" which is set on a mission to returning a lost baby boy to his tribe, the herd contains 3 completely different animals that will keep you entertained throughout not forgetting the scrat and the acorn sections in the film which are hilarious. the 2nd film contain the 3 characters yet again trying to escape the "melt down" but this time the film introduces some new characters but still continues to keep you laughing and entertained. This bluray dvd retails at about £28 but shop around on the net and you can find it much cheaper i got min from Blahdvd £16.99 delivered.
As i have a bluray dvd player built in to my playstation 3 and a 40 inch sony LCD HD tv i decided to buy this for my two children affter seeing the High Definition trailer on my playstation
First of all the film is great just like the first one scrat the saber tooth squirrel keeps trying to get that acorn (the kids absolutly love watching this character he is hillarious) this film will be loved by kids and adults.
