Another Sunday, another movie, helping me relax after another heavy night out. This time, the movie, I'm With Lucy, a romantic comedy (OK, chick flick) with Monica Potter.
I know what some of you are going to say right now- "why do you insist on watching this bilge Kati?", especially baalzamon, sghawken and richada! Well, on Blockbuster online, you form a list of the films you want to see, in priority order (I have been awaiting Madagascar and other new releases for ages), and they send you the DVDs as and when you reach top of the waiting list. So instead of waiting for ages with nothing to watch, I have added about a million movies from the comedy section to keep me going on my lonely nights in front of the TV! So that is why I keep reviewing this stuff, because its there!
***The Plot*** Lucy has just been dumped by her seemingly perfect boyfriend and is a mess. She goes on 5 dates, of which we see the first
few minutes of each- all pretty dire. Then the films fast-forwards to an hour before Lucy's wedding, to one of her five dates. But which one is it? The rest of the film goes back on each of the dates, and the lead up to the wedding, without giving much away at all. So, can you guess which one she ends up with?
The men are: Doug - sensitive divorcee Gabriel - Sensual Spaniard Bobby- arrogant but 'inspiring' baseball star Barry - moody and geeky IT manager Or Luke - Practically perfect in every way?
***Verdict*** When I read the cover of the DVD, I thought predictable baloney and decided it would be hugely obvious which of the men she'd end up with from the first few minutes. But actually, as the film and the dates progress, it becomes very hard to see which guy she will end up with. Lucy sees some potential in each of them, and it really does leave you guessing, at least for the first hour. I was torn between 3 of the guys for at the beginning, and now, knowing the ending, its pretty obvious what was going to happen, but it wasn't quite the predictable 'baloney' that I had at first expected.
The film is funny, sweet and pretty girly. Monica Potter is just like Julia Roberts; she looks like her, sounds like her, and stars in pretty much the same kind of films. I like her character, because she's uptight and a bit crazy, without being too irritating. The men are all interesting, but the performance by David Boreanaz was most impressive in my eyes, as I have only seen him if Buffy before, so it was nice to see him playing something other than 'brooding demon'. Having said that, I doubt this movie did much for their careers, it was released in 2002 and as far as I can tell, when straight to DVD.
The film was only 90 minutes long, which is typical length for a film of this nature. It's hardly rocket science, but it will keep you guessing for a while, while not being too taxing on the brain. Its pretty innocent too, limited amounts of sex, violence, and bad language, so I would say this film is suitable for your teenage daughter, your mum, or for any girly in a somewhat 'delicate' state. However, if you're a bloke, or like intelligent thrillers and dramas, I'm sure I don't need to tell you not to go there.
***Cast*** Monica Potter .... Lucy Craig Bierko .... Peter Linda Halaska .... Saleslady Julianne Nicholson .... Jo Flora Martínez .... Melissa Afemo Omilami .... Cab Driver #1 John Hannah .... Doug Gael García Bernal .... Gabriel Anthony LaPaglia .... Bobby Staley John Tormey .... Tommy the Doorman Jeff Norris .... Mover Henry Thomas .... Barry David Boreanaz .... Luke
***The DVD*** The DVD' extras are OK, including subtitles and scene selection. There is also the trailer for the film, and interviews with the cast and crew, which are pretty amusing, because the cast seem desperate to justify why they chose to be in the picture- and their reasons are pretty poor ones! I don't really 'get' drama-babble but they do go on a little bit!
The DVD is available pretty much anywhere, at amazon it is £6.97 and there are new and used marketplace copies at £3.50. Although I enjoyed the film to some extent, I wouldn't pay more than £3.50, as I probably would only watch it the one time.
