Captivating
Review of I'm Not Scared (aka Io Non Ho Paura) (Subtitled) by kirstymack80

Advantages: scenery, outstanding acting
Disadvantages: nothing

Scorching southern Italy, 1978. Five children ride their bikes through golden fields to find a dilapidated house. In the middle of nowhere, they play there for a while, daring each other to do silly things like walk on a dangerous beam, rotting wood threatening to give way any minute and a nasty fall beckoning. Michele is there with his younger sister, Maria. As they turn to go home, Maria realises she has forgotten her glasses. She’s upset and ...
...so Michele goes back, alone, to retrieve them. At the abandoned house, he sees a piece of corrugated iron obscuring a hole in the ground. Curiosity aroused, he moves the iron aside and, looking down into the hole, several feet below, he sees what he thinks is a human leg. Disturbed and frightened, he runs away, but days later he’s still thinking about it and he can’t help but go back to the house to see if there’s someone still down in the hole. ... Read review

Golden Grain
Review of I'm Not Scared (aka Io Non Ho Paura) (Subtitled) by MALU

Advantages: touching story, brilliant actors, impressive photography
Disadvantages: none

When I think of the film, the colour yellow, the golden yellow of ripe grain, comes to my mind. After the lights came on, a woman in the cinema remarked, "I didn't know that such a landscape existed in Italy." Why should she, why should anyone? This is not tourist Italy, the film is set in the south of the region Apulia in the south of Italy, the sea is far away, there are no cultural highlights that would lure people to visit, it's one of the parts ...
...to a cluster of houses, they don't even form a hamlet, in the middle of the proverbial nowhere, the men work far away from their families, either in the north of the country or overseas (Venice and Brazil are mentioned), the women run the houses and the children roam freely through the fields during their summer holidays, they race their bikes along the bumpy paths or play pubescent 'I dare you' games. One day on the way back from playing on the ... Read review

An ocean of golden wheat
Review of I'm Not Scared (aka Io Non Ho Paura) (Subtitled) by silver40

Advantages: A wonderful story at a fast pace
Disadvantages: Too short

This is a book review in the film section because I could not locate the product not found link. Michel Amitrano and his sister Maria live in Aqua Traverse a small hamlet in the district of Lucignano. His father drives a Fiat Lupetto truck with a green tarpaulin. His mother is a kind but determined woman with a large heart. It is June 1978 and Italy is in the grip of a heat wave so bad that the adults stay indoors during the day, away from the ...
...a day nine-year-old Michel starts a journey that involves him in a chain of events that will change his life. Against the backdrop of a rolling ocean of golden wheat he and a little group of children head off across the fields on their bikes with a hen in a bag to feed Melichetti’s pigs. Skull, the self appointed leader of this gang of six, told them Melichetti had thrown his dachshund to the pigs because he‘d peed in the house, so they set off to ... Read review

I'm Not Scared (aka Io Non Ho Paura) (Subtitled)

Main specs

Actor(s): Aitana Sanchez-Gijon, Dino Abbrescia, Giorgio Careccia

Director(s): Gabriele Salvatores

Genre: Drama

Classification: 15 years and over

Running Time: 1 hour 41 minutes

Video Category: World Cinema Feature Film

Country Of Origin: Italy

Plot: Italian director Gabriele Salvatores (MEDITERRANEO) masterfully directs this eerie and engrossing suspense thriller involving a 10-year-old boy who lives in rural southern Italy. It is summertime and Michele (Guiseppe Cristiano) is free to spend the long sunny days riding his bike and running through the wheat fields. In fact, the wheat could be considered Michele's costar, as it often consumes the entire scope of the screen showing how Michele plays, hides, and ponders life in the vast expanses of flowing yellow stalks. Because there are only a few other children in the village Michele often plays alone, and one day he discovers a hole in the ground, obscured by wheat, where a boy his age is chained and imprisoned. The boy has clearly been starved and mistreated, yet Michele approaches him fearlessly and attempts to make friends with him. With the dreaminess that is a 10-year-old's truest treasure, Michele doesn't ask too many questions, nor does he draw conclusions about why the boy is in the hole, or who put him there. Through the expressions on young Michele's face, viewers can read his light questioning of human existence, human morality, and human rights. However, as the film draws on, subtly revealing shocking secrets about the adults in Michele's village, the beauty of this utterly simple yet deadly powerful plot come clear. I'M NOT SCARED is a moving film built on crystal clear images of the Italian sun, sky, and wheat fields; strangely offset by its startling loss-of-innocence story.
