The weather over this summer has been far from brilliant but the quality of Hollywood blockbusters on display in our cinemas has given me a alternative to the rain, with massive sequels such as spiderman 2 and shrek 2 hitting big money returns worldwide. summers wouldn't be the same without a movie starring will smith though so when i saw the ad on TV for I, Robot about a month ago it became a film on my list of films i must see this summer along with 'The Bourne Supremacy', 'The Village' and 'The Chronicles of Riddick' so about a week and a half ago i went to see I,Robot and i did not disappoint.
Cast:
Will Smith (Men in Black, Bad Boys) Bridget Moynahan (The Recruit,) Alan Tudyk ( Dodgeball, ice age) James Cromwell ( The green mile)
Director: Alex Proyas ( The crow, Dark city) Running time: 1hr 55min Cert: 12A
The Plot:
I,Robot is set in the year 2035, a time were robots are used in all areas of everyday life and almost everyone owns a robot who act like personal assistants to there human owners , the design of the robots is based on humans with legs, arms and a head, they are used to perform everyday tasks such as cleaning and walking the dog.
Will Smith plays detective del spooner who has a phobia of robots and has kept his house free of modern high tech equipment, he also like wearing 'vintage' 2004 trainers, one of the few new things he owns is his aldi car which looks like its come straight out of the film 'Minority Report'.
If you've read any of my previous film reviews you will know that i don't like giving away all the story of the film because i feel that if you read my review before you've seen the film it could spoil the film for you especially when there are twists in the plot (as there are in I,Robot), but the core story of I,Robot is that will smith is sent to investigate the suicide of Alfred Lanning who is the creator of Robots as they are in 2035 which happens just a week before the launch of a brand new type of super robot, the only problem is that will suspects the prototype robot 'sonny' of the murder of its designer.
Will embarks on a journey to find the evidence to prove this in a world were such a crime committed by a robot is unheard of, on his journey to catch sonny he gets a strange felling that mechanical things have it in for him e.g. Lannings house is demolished with him still inside.
The film progresses into a much more intelligent action thriller and the solid story its based on begins to fall into place with a few well worked twists near the end. will's hate of robots is used well by Lanning even though he is dead because he left a hologram device which can answer certain questions will asks it about his investigation but in the end will has to put his hate of sonny behind him as he finds out that sonny is only another clue given to will by lanning to prevent a much more bigger event happening when the new robots are released and start a revolution.
Not only does I,Robot have a great story and brilliant acting, it also has some of the best special effects I've seen, on screen the world in 2035 looks really real and not too futuristic and the actor-CGI interaction is very well done. overall I,Robot is well worth going to see, its still on general release all over the country and has already made over £15m at the box office and its had great reviews in the press. I went to see it on a Wednesday so i was able to use my orange mobile phone to get 2 for the price of 1 on the tickets as it was a 'orange Wednesday, if your a orange user just text 'film' to 241 and they will text you back with a code to use at any cinema to get the free ticket, personally Wednesdays have become cinema days for me because as i am going to university at the end of September i have to look after the pennys better now and orange Wednesdays means me and a friend can split the cost of a ticket.
