I am not the biggest fan of Adam Sandler and his films; whereas none of them are totally unwatchable, a number of them are distinctly average and not worth more than a quick glance. Chuck and Larry are both firemen, saving lives on a daily basis. They are also good friends. But whereas Chuck is a serial womaniser, Larry is a widower, struggling to bring up two children. One day an accident at work results in Larry saving Chuck's life; Chuck then promises to do anything for Larry in return. A bureaucratic glitch means that Larry can't leave his pension to his children on his death. The only way around it is a domestic partnership...which results in Chuck and Larry getting married in Canada. Officials are suspicious, however, many apparently gay couples have proved to be conning the authorities in the past. Chuck and Larry must convince the authorities that their love is genuine; no mean feat when Chuck is falling in love with the female lawyer they have hired to manage their case. Will they be caught out? And what about Chuck's relationship with the beautiful lawyer?
I am not the biggest fan of Adam Sandler and his films; whereas none of them are totally unwatchable, a number of them are distinctly average and not worth more than a quick glance. However, in the mood for something light-hearted, and finding this DVD in Asda for just £2, I succumbed. As far as Sandler is concerned, this is a fairly standard role for him. As Chuck, he is perfectly likeable, despite some rather dubious behaviour with teams of women at the beginning of the film. He does provide plenty of smiles, if not outright laughs, but this is still a fairly unmemorable role. Still, with Sandler, you nearly always know what to expect, so if you really don't like him, stay away. Otherwise, expect the usual - a slightly daft character providing a few sniggers along the way.
What really persuaded me to part with hard cash to purchase the DVD was Kevin James. I really enjoy watching him on screen; I thought he was superb in King of Queens and Everybody Loves Raymond, and I've enjoyed him in Hitch and, more recently, Paul Blart. Like Sandler, he always tends to play the same role - a likeable loser who has very little luck with the ladies - and that is exactly what Larry is. I still enjoyed his performance though. There is a huge amount of humour surrounding the fact that he is a little 'chubby', which is perhaps a bit boring now, but Larry is a real underdog, and it is very hard not to want him to win through. I don't think Kevin James is anywhere near stretched in the role, but I like what he does so much that it doesn't really matter.
Jessica Biel plays the lady lawyer. I'm not a huge fan of her acting; I think she is usually hired on the basis of her looks rather than her acting skills. However, here, she is actually more than just passable. She does play the straight lawyer, but she does have some comic moments, and I think she handled them very well. It is also great to see an actress with some serious curves - she's got a great figure, unlike some of the skinny minnies that are inflicted on us. Her chemistry with Sandler is not all that convincing though - I didn't really feel anything when they were on-screen together. However, Sandler is as much to blame as Biel is for that.
There are a number of 'cameos' by well-known faces throughout the film. My favourite was definitely Dan Ackroyd. He plays the fire station manager and has some cracking lines that he delivered with thorough enjoyment. Steve Buscemi is the rather creepy guy who is checking up on Chuck and Larry's relationship. Then the Asian Minister who marries the couple is played by Rob Schneider - obviously he's made up to look Japanese, but is a Westerner. I can't say I'm all that keen on Westerners making themselves up to look Asian - it's a little patronising - but Schneider is quite funny nevertheless. Finally, there is a cameo by director Dennis Dugan, who plays a taxi driver disapproving of Chuck and Larry's relationship.
The best thing about the film for me was the angle it took on homosexuality. I feel very strongly that someone's sexual preference is of nobody's business except their own, and it angers me deeply when some people acuse homosexuals of being 'evil' and 'against God's will'. This film portrays a lot of the attitudes that homosexuals have to put up with, making fun of these attitudes and promoting the fact that we all need to be more accepting of each other. At the same time, there is a lot of stereotyping, with outwardly gay (read feminine) men camping it up right left and centre. I can understand why that was - purely for the comic angle - but it is a little annoying and simplistic nevertheless. Of course, if you are offended by even the idea of homosexuality, then you will want to avoid the film. There is, however, very little that could be construed as offensive in the film, except for a little hand holding and hugging - the most overtly sexual moment involves Chuck feeling the lady lawyer's boobs to check that they are real and not silicone. The rating is 15 in the UK, but parents must obviously make up their own minds about whether to let young children watch.
Knowing that the film had Adam Sandler and Kevin James in it, I expected it to be light-hearted with a few laughs along the way. I didn't find it all that funny. I smiled a few times, but there were no belly laughs. The funniest lines come from Dan Ackroyd's mouth; unfortunately his screen time is just a few minutes. And the ending, when it came, was one of the twee-est I have seen, even for an Adam Sandler film. I think most of the jokes were done in the first half hour, after that, they were repeated with much less conviction, and I began to lose interest. At 115 minutes, the film could have done with being about 20 minutes shorter. I didn't really think about switching off, but I wasn't paying all that much attention for the last half hour.
There are a number of special features with the DVD. I quite enjoyed watching the deleted scenes; although I'm glad that they were deleted because the film was already too long, they were still enjoyable. Unfortunately, they are commentated over by the director, which is a bit off-putting, especially as he said nothing of any value. Then there is a hotpotch of short features, all of which would have been better amalgamated into one long feature. There is one on the humour of the film, showing everyone behind the scenes having a laugh. Another one is on the stunts and how they were done - there are a couple of dangerous moments when Larry saves Chuck's life, for example. Other features look at the cameos that well-known actors played and the cast's favourite moments. Finally, there is an audio commentary for those that enjoy such things.
On the whole, this is an average film. I don't regret watching it, but I doubt I'll ever bother with it again, and will probably give the DVD away to my sister. If you enjoy Adam Sandler and Kevin James' brand of humour, then you will probably still want to see it and there are worse ways of passing a couple of hours. Otherwise, I don't think it's worth bothering with until it comes on television. Three stars out of five.
The DVD is available from play.com for £3.99. However, look out for it in Asda, where I paid just £2.
Advantages: Pretty funny, Good cast and performances, good DVD extras Disadvantages: Very corny at the end, fairly predictable, jokes perhaps a bit too 'cheap'
- Introduction -
I had seen a trailer at the cinema last year for this movie and was interested in it because Kevin James is in it. He's probably best known as Doug in the sitcom 'King of Queens', which is one of my favourite US sitcoms. He also appeared in the romantic comedy Hitch, along side Will Smith. I also quite enjoyed a few of Adam Sandlers movies (I've alread reviewed 'Happy Gilmore' here on Ciao, if anyone's interested *ahem* sorry for ... ...story seemed pretty daft and I wasn't sure it was something I'd really want to pay to see on the big screen, I decided to wait and check it out on DVD.
When I signed up to the Amazon unlimited DVD rental scheme, this was one of the first movies that I added to my rental list. I was very lucky actually, as it only just came out on DVD on Monday (14th January 08) and I was sent it by the end of the week, so I was able to watch it last night. I must ...

Advantages: Adam Sandler at his best, good message. Disadvantages: Not enough of the funny.
I rented this movie today after college, and whilst I was in the shop with my nan and we were trying to choose between this and a random chick flick, I had never heard anything about the chick flick, and said you can never go wrong with an Adam Sandler film so that is how we started watching it, like you really care. Now for the decent stuff.

I know some people can't stand him, his jokes are not for everyone's taste but I myself love the fact that you know that his films are always gonna bring you laughs and have a good ending. ===GAY JOKES===
Even though through the film, they bring in some very stereotypical gays that could be quite offensive. I know some of the jokes made me wince every now and then, but over all I think it was done tastefully and there's ...

...I've no feelings either way, I liked The Wedding Singer but find most of his stuff I can take a pass on. I Now Prounonce You Chuck & Larry was originally slated to be directed by David Dobkin, fresh off the big money taker Wedding Crashers. I can only assume he saw where this was going and decided to pass.
Larry (Kevin James) is a big lug of a fireman whose wife passed away leaving him with two kids. When it looks like his benefits are going down ... ...a closet gay man.
I also saw the whole crux of the film about Larry not being able to get benefits from the death of his wife was pretty slim, it felt like a simple scene thrown in without any real weight just to set up this whole tepid affair.

I've read that this was shot on HD and the quality of the picture is as good as you'd expect. It looks like film that makes it a good call for studios to ditch the celluloid.

Advantages: Good story and funny Disadvantages: None
As I like Adam Sandler as an actor I really wanted to see this film, what put me off was the fact that the last few of his films I have seem have been a bit disappointing but eventually I took the plunge and sat and watched it. The film stars Adam Sandler who plays Chuck and Kevin James who plays Larry. The men are best of friends and work together as firemen. At the start of the film we learn that Larry has lost his wife and is struggling to bring ... ...away from the women?
I am pleased that I finally took the time to watch this as Adam is back at playing the comedy role very well. His character was very good and Kevin James also did his part justice and the two actors worked very well together and made their onscreen friendship very real. The story was very good if not a bit far fetched at times but this did add to the humour of the film. The supporting actors also added some more depth to the ...

So over the holiday period I watched a lot of films mainly family types or sad films but I think it has been too long since I watched a half decent comedy. So, being a comedy fan of the likes of Ben Stiller and Adam Sandler I give them a chance usually. I had watched 'The Heartbreak Kid' by Ben Stiller as I reviewed previously but was not impressed so I decided to leave it up to Adam Sandler for a few laughs. My friends had gone to see 'I Now Pronounce ... ...was funny but I wasn't sure whether to trust them. However, I did and got the film and decided to give it a try as it couldn't hurt really. The kind of buddy comedy Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau might have starred in 40 years ago (Variety, 11/12/2007)
DVD Description
Two comedy dynamos unite in this comedy from director Dennis Dugan (PARENTHOOD, HAPPY GILMORE). Brooklyn firefighters Larry Valentine (Kevin James) and Chuck Levine (Adam Sandler) have watched each other's backs since they met in the Academy even though they are different as can be. Playboy Chuck can't get enough of the ladies--and they can’t get enough of him. Larry, meanwhile, is a widower raising two young children and still grieving the death of his wife. When Larry saves Chuck's life on a call, he comes up with a unique way for his buddy to repay him: having missed the opportunity to name his children beneficiaries, he asks Chuck to act as his domestic partner so that his children will be provided for if tragedy strikes. But these two buddies soon find themselves the subject of an investigation by the city. Enter Alex McDonough (Jessica Biel), their highly attractive attorney who leaves Chuck desperately wishing he wasn’t pretending to be gay. Initially, Chuck and Larry are guilty of making stereotypical gay jokes. In fact, pretty much any and every gay joke and stereotype turns up in this film. But their attitudes change when the shoe is on the other foot and they find themselves and their new gay friends the subject of discrimination, mocking and name-calling. Ving Rhames, Steve Buscemi, Richard Chamberlain, and Nicholas Turturro have supporting roles, and musicians Lance Bass and Dave Matthews make brief appearances. SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE alumni also abound: watch for Rachel Dratch, David Spade, and Rob Schneider in small roles, while Dan Akroyd plays the boys' captain.
