This is a touching film. Not only does it address the question of whether a mentally handicapped person has the capability of raising their daughter, but also how they are percieved in society.
The Acting: I must say, Sean Penn is not my favourite actor, and neither is Michelle Phiefer, but after watching this film my opinion has changed. Sean Penn in particular was outstanding! He captured the very heart and soul of his character Sam. The young girl that plays his daughter is also amazing!
The Plot: Sam is suddenly left holding the baby after the woman who he had the kid with leaves him at the bus stop. Now, Sam is mentally handicapped and tries his best at raising her. He is very loving, supportive, caring and only wants the very best for her.
At the of seven she is getting smarter than her dad and her friends start to take the mick. At her birthday party things take a turn for the worst and a lady from the department of child welfare decides that Sam is not able to care for her anymore, so Lucy is taken away.
Sam desperatley wants her back so he enlists the help of a lawyer. Rita (Pheifer) is a high flying lawyer who wanted nothing to do with him when she first met him, but after her colleagues scorn her she changes her mind and sets out to help him.
During the court case is where both characters really develop and expand.
There are several tear jerking moments as Sam really touches your heart with his plea for his daughters return.
Don't worry I'm not going to spoil the ending for you...
My Opinion: A fantastic film that really takes a good look at stereotypes and how they are percieved in todays society of fast food, fast service, where no one has time to stop and smell the coffee.
We are who we are for a reason. We all try to do our best. One persons idea of right is not necessarily someone elses, so with that in mind...
Beatles. When the mother of his daughter abandons them he names his daughter Lucy Diamond (after the Beatles song) and raises her. But as she reaches age 7 herself Sam...
