After catching one of the episodes on TV midway through the series, it was obvious to see that this was one of the most original, if not bizarre comedies shown on the BBC in a long time - talking animals being created as part of a terrible animal cruelty injustice.
The main plot emerged after watching the DVD from the first episode - the animals had been part of a cruel vivisection laboratory experiment which had gone terribly wrong. This was followed by an attempted rescue mission by a crazed-animal-rights-activist called Julian.
The group of talking animals eventually find themselves at an empty cottage in the countryside, where they stay in the hope of eventually returning to their home (the vivisection laboratory).
Originality is probably the best feature of this series - not only were they talking animals, but they had their own personality and character - a slutty rat, fame-crazed sparrow named mark Andrew, a mental monkey named Hugh, an under-sexed dog named Winona Matthews and finally Philip Materson-Bowie, the intellectual horse. These are the 5 characters that the story is based around, and they couldn't have really been improved. Every one of them is funny in their own way, probably my favourite being Mark Andrews the sparrow (stage name Glen Belt) in which in one of the episodes releases a hit song on the internet with help from a Chinese girl. Crazy.
The animation used in the program is very easy on the eye, with quite simple cartoon-like animation which is very effective, creating some beautiful looking scenery in the countryside.
One of the few criticisms of the DVD is that there are few extra's - only the making of documentary, and the commentary offered on some of the episodes. Still these are still entertaining and interesting, especially as Alan Partridge features on the commentary (voice of Philip the horse).
After watching the sixth episode, and still being engrossed to the final end, you wish there had been more episodes produced. Each one was very original and intelligent and none of them were similar in any way, so you felt that maybe a few more could have been produced, but that's just a compliment to the entertainment value these episodes offered. Each one was classic in its own way, and perhaps even a new series could be made as a follow-up, yet it isn't very likely to be as the story is pretty much closed after the final episode with the animals returning home.

The making of documentary is good in itself, as well as the commentary offered, and the fact this was such an original comedy with clever animation and catchy music throughout (thanks to Mark Andrews) and with impressive voices offered for all the characters means it's a must for anyone after one of the best, intelligent comedies of the year.
Just bought this for my son who is a star wars fanatic. (We also saw it at the cinema). I was a bit dubious about it at first as iamnot a great fan of animateddvd. However i thought it was absolutely fantastic. I would recommend this to all parents of children aged 6+. You know how they all love to watch the same film over and over again and this one is no exception. This has only been in my sons possession for a few weeks and i must say it is the most watched film that he has ever owned!!!
The animation is fab as are the sound effects brilliant. Having the original characters from the normal films doing the voice overs for example (Ewan Mcgregor) increases its watchability. We as a family have all enjoyed this movie. Definitely recommended although getting tedious now!!!! ...
Advantages: good story - and true to boot; ocassionally funny; occasionally poignant Disadvantages: not very exciting and should be, Julia Roberts overdrive, cliche after cliche
/thrillers. Hardly taxing, obviously.
I cannot comment on the soundtrack as I simply didn't notice it. Iamnot a musical animal and it has to be very memorable to barely register at all.
DVD SPECIFICS
I watched it on a 17’’ computer monitor and the picture and sound quality seemed perfectly acceptable as far as my requirements go, but then Iamnot very discerning viewer, and of course I cannot vouch for quality on home-cinema big screen or even a normal 21'' or bigger television.
Iam rarely interested in extras, as far as Iam concerned each DVD could be just like a VHS video: film is a film is a film. For the purpose of this review, I made a note of them though and even sampled one or two:
*The usual ‘Making of’ featurette which I simply couldn't be bothered to watch as I had enough of EB after the film ...

Review
Very funny, daringly original and disturbingly entertaining. (Sunday Times, )
Funny, clever, demented and perhaps most importantly, the only TV show you'll ever see in which a horse has to build himself a makeshift hand out of twigs in order to ring a doorbell. (The Guardian, )
An inspired satirical cartoon...voiced by what is fast becoming the repertory company of British comedy. (The Independent, )
