I wasn't too keen to watch this, so every time my mom said we were watching a DVD I always hoped it wasn't this one. I was usually the one who picked what we were going to watch and I made sure we never picked this one. Then it was my mom's turn to pick a DVD and when she picked I Am Legend, I wasn't particularly happy about her choice, and had to watch this DVD because it's part of the house rules.

When my mom first picked it up in HMV, we were starting to become desperate and were needing a 3rd DVD, we had already picked up 2 DVDs and a third DVD will complete the offer which was 3 for £20 (now, however it's 4 for £20). I wasn't too keen to watch this, so every time my mom said we were watching a DVD I always hoped it wasn't this one. I was usually the one who picked what we were going to watch and I made sure we never picked this one. This film is adapted from the 1957 novel by Richard Matheson. This novel has been made into a film 3 times. It was first adapted in 1964 as "The Last Man on Earth", then in 1971 as "The Omega Man". And then finally in 2007, "I Am Legend"
The director of this film is Francis Lawrence. I don't know what to say about this director. Okay, so I didn't enjoy this film, and didn't expect I would either. But that doesn't make him a bad director; any director who had decided to direct this film couldn't have done it better, and possibly couldn't have done it worse. Francis, I presume, is a really good director and has 3 new films coming up; also he is mostly linked with the music video industry, as he has directed many music videos such as Britney's and Pink's!
Will Smith - Robert Neville Emma Thompson - Dr. Krippen Alice Braga - Anna Charlie Tahan - Ethan Salli Richardson - Zoe Neville Abbey and Kona - Sam the Dog Dash Mihok - Infected Alpha Male Joanna Numata - Infected Alpha Female Pat Fraley - President (voice) Mike Patton - Creature Vocal Effects
Will Smith happens to be the most famous actor out of the whole cast. I have to admit that Will Smith is a great actor, but I don't really know why it is that I do not like him. He appears in lots and lots of films, and he has also made a music career, however I just don't like him, he's a great actor, but I just don't like him. This could possibly be one of the main reasons why I didn't want to watch this film in the first place. However I cannot be sure. Will Smith can be seen in "Men in Black", "Men in Black II", "I, Robot", "Shark Tale" (<--- One I did enjoy watching), "Hitch", "The Pursuit of Happiness", and many, many more, also you can see his albums in CD shops!
The other actors/actresses are not widely known and therefore if you think you recognise any then you may have seen them in one or two other films, but they are not frequently known in lots films.
This film follows Robert Neville, played by Will Smith. Robert is the last man surviving on earth. There are these horrible creatures that are living on earth, and Robert intends to kill them! Only then his dog dies, and he has to find a way of surviving, then he find a family also surviving on earth, and it's up to him, to protect them.
From what I have just written about this film, it sounds incredibly boring, and I have to say that it is, however, I think the book must be a lot better, however I have no clue. I think this film is supposed to make you really tense and make you more and more intrigued watching it, and I do believe that it would work for about 10% of the population on our Earth, however us 90% will gradually fall asleep watching this, and I do remember having to get up and make myself frequent cup of teas in order to make sure that I watch this film so that I could review it.
My favourite character was the dog, you really felt for it. However, the dog died soon, which would be my reaction, I would want to die knowing I'd tried to save the earth, or tried helping, in the dogs case. The dog was really cute, but Stitch and Gizmo is a lot cuter (not sure who Gizmo and Stitch are? Flick through my reviews and you should find them, they are from different films.)
Overall this film is not one of my favourites and I would have to be literally forced to watch it a 2nd time. I seriously don't want to watch this one again, if given the chance!
When my mom first picked this up in HMV, she was really, really surprised by how heavy it is. It must have cost quite a bit of money to make the case as it is completely metal, well not completely metal, only the cover and the rest is plastic inside. I presume the metal weighs down this DVD. I, too, was surprised by how heavy it was.
This DVD, as I have already mentioned, is 2 disc special edition. The first disc is for the DVD player, this shows a few special features and the film, obviously. The second DVD is for the computer or laptop. Slipped into the side is an instructions page on "How to Get Your I AM LEGEND Digital Copy". I have not done this due to the fact that I do not want to store this film onto my computer (Who does?).
Special features are listed below, because I SERIOUSLY didn't want to watch them, and who could blame me, I had just endured 96 minutes of a boring film! Anyway here are the special features:
On Disc One: -Original Release of Film -4 awesome animated comics: Death as a Gift, Isolation, Sacrificing the Few for the Many and Shelter
On Disc Two (The Computer/Laptop Disc): -Never before seen brand new alternative ending -Cautionary Tale: The Science of I Am Legend: Exploring the History and Current Status of Life Threatening Viral Infections -Digital Copy of the Film -DVD-ROM* PC Weblink to Intense Bonus Material Databank
I have to admit the special features also sound really, really boring, but that could be a reason we never ever watch the special features, because the first ones you ever watch happens to be really boring!
I have to say I really do not recommend this film, if you think you'll like it, go for it, but I assure you that most of you will not even watch it all and do what I should have done and fell asleep watching it! I hope this review makes up for yesterday's DVD review, I feel really ashamed of it and will re-write it when I have the time, I'm so sorry! I thank you all for reading and your rating will be very much appreciated, thanks!
Advantages: bit of a nail biter, lots of suspence Disadvantages: not alot of dialect. but there isn't anyone for him to talk to
...off a little slow and i think it taks a little too long to get to know what happened. will smith doesn't speak for the majority of this film other than to his dog, but in all fairness he plays a very good part even though there isn't alot of dialect. one for the ladies as there is a a shower scene for all the will smith lovers!! special effects are good and makes you wonder what it would be like being in a city on your own. if your a dog lover then ...

Advantages: Tense thriller Disadvantages: Depressing at times
IamLegend is one of those frightening views of how man could end up destroying the planet that we all live on. Whereas some films focus on the nuclear threat this film actually looks t the effects of a devastating virus that mutates from a vaccination hence the effect on the population.
Will Smith is one of the only surviving humans in a New York that has fallen into ruin and is populated by wild animals and looks like a jungle. Smith only companion is a dog with whome he uses to hunt and also for company.
This is an engaging film in which Smith turns in a good performance showing a man struggling with isolaton and the lack of human companionship. Those humans who remain have turned into a zombie like creature from whome he needs to protect himself.

Advantages: Alternate ending a must see. Disadvantages: Still just a zombie movie
After watching the movie the first time my reaction was mixed to say the least. Reading the description gives u a broad stroke to what the movie is about, but what it doesn't elaborate on is the fact that while "Will Smith comands the screen for most of the movie", most of the movie is 85% of it, leaving ur thoughts wondering at times to what to wear the next day and if u should get ur car washed. Will Smith played the character very well, making u as a viewer feel the pain and mental anguish he is going thru. The ending however, is what this SpecialEdition is all about. Yes there are zombies, and one man fighting them off looking for a cure seems to make for a interesting (if not somewhat overdone) plot. But it's the ending that makes this movie controversial. If u have seen this movie before and thought the ending was not quite ...
Advantages: Great ending Disadvantages: The rest of the film
Iamlegend? Personally, i thought this one stunk like unwashed foot!
All in all its a film with over an hour of buildup and ten minutes of actual action at the end - touted as an action film.
Will Smith usually (and there have been exceptions in the past) does do films that are pretty good - look at Men In Black (though not the sequel!) and Hitch. Good solid releases, well received and well acted.
In all fairness to him, he did make the very best of a bad job, with a heartbreaking scene with sam, his dog, and only companion, dying.
Basically a zombie flick, without the obligatory huge amounts of violence, this is a pure angst flick. Will Smith plays the part of the lonely army GI Joe exceptionally well, with minimal dialogue and, quite fantastically massive amounts of pure stage direction.
I wonder if he took the movie ...
Robert Neville is the last survivor in a post-apocalyptic New York, but there's still danger left on the city's streets.

Smith bravely mines dark emotional depths (BBC, 19/03/2008)
Smith is the perfect actor... to play a survivor who has no one to talk to but his dog and himself... he also draws on the vulnerability he showed last year in THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS (Entertainment Weekly, 19/03/2008)
Slick, adrenaline-fuelled fun (Los Angeles Times, 19/03/2008)
I AM LEGEND is mind-blowing excitement (Maxim, 19/03/2008)
A scary, inventive, exciting and breathless adventure that combines the best elements of CHILDREN OF MEN, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK and THE ROAD WARRIOR (New York Post, 19/03/2008)
There is something graceful and effortless about this performance (Mr Smith's), which not only shows what it might feel like to be the last man on earth, but also demonstrates what it is to be a movie star (New York Times, 19/03/2008)
Big Willie has no problem holding the screen... director Francis Lawrence (CONSTANTINE) keeps you squirming (Rolling Stone, 19/03/2008)
No one... could fail to be impressed by the gobsmacking digital creations of an empty, ruined Manhattan (The Guardian, 19/03/2008)
Smith, sporting a newly buffed physique, delivers an extraordinary performance as a man slowly coming unglued under the strain of no human contact and a constantly alternating role of hunter and prey (The Hollywood Reporter, 19/03/2008)
A beguiling portrait of ache and isolation in post-apocalyptic New York (The Times, 19/03/2008)
DVD Description
In I AM LEGEND, Will Smith joins the ranks of Vincent Price (in 1964's THE LAST MAN ON EARTH) and Charlton Heston (in 1971's OMEGA MAN) as the star of an adaptation of Richard Matheson's 1954 novel of the same name. Often surprising in its focus on loneliness and loss, this thoughtful, eerie, and restrained sci-fi horror film provides a parade of startling visuals, but never allows special effects to overcome the human element. Smith, in a strong performance very different from his usual persona, is Robert Neville, the lone survivor in a New York City where streets are overgrown and deer gambol among deserted vehicles. Following an epidemic, the Earth's population has been turned into an army of nocturnal zombies. Immune to the virus, military scientist Neville searches for a cure in his Washington Square townhouse. Haunted by visions of his family leaving quarantined Manhattan two years prior, he drives through the city with his German Shepherd, Sam, by day and barricades his home from the monsters nightly. But when Anna (Alice Braga)--another immune stranger-finds him, they will have to fight the onslaught twice as hard.
Akiva Goldsman and Mark Protosevich's emotionally-charged script showcases the charisma of Smith, who commands the screen alone for most of the picture (aside Abbey, the talented pooch). Director Francis Lawrence (CONSTANTINE) uses music minimally, wisely allowing the eerie cityscapes to remain mostly silent. The set pieces, including an overgrown, deserted Times Square and a lion hunting a deer in the Flatrion District, are goose bump-inducing moments of stark beauty. A chilling and effective adaptation of a horror classic, I AM LEGEND is also a thought-provoking piece of Hollywood filmmaking.
