I Am Legend is a the huge blockbuster film starring the one and only yep, you guessed it Will Smith! This film was released surrounded by a huge bubble of hype and in my opinion this film was so over hyped that the only thing people were likely to feel about I Am Legend was disappointment. I Am Legend was made on a huge budget of $150,000,000 and despite my own preconception I Am Legend (unsurprisingly) managed to gross an estimated $585,349,010.
Most critics reacted well towards this film, and I can fully understand why because this film did have the potential to be an epic and with a lead actor like Will Smith it should have been.
I Am Legend is directed by Francis Lawrence who prominently a music video director (what he was doing making a huge film like I Am Legend is beyond me!), Lawrence has worked with big artists such as: Destiny’s Child, Pink, Missy Elliot, Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani and The Pussycat Dolls.
Will Smith is a man who probably needs no introduction. Besides probably being every girls dream guy he’s one of the, if not the biggest movie star on the planet. He’s appeared in smash hits such as: Bad Boys, Ali,
Enemy Of The State and Seven Pounds.
It’s the year 2012 and a revolutionary cure for Cancer has been found, there’s only one problem, instead of curing the world from one of the most feared diseases it takes out the entire population bar one man Robert Neville… or so he thinks.
Robert Neville is a US soldier and most prominently one of the last people on Earth. The miracle Cancer cure hasn’t just wiped out the population, it’s turned them into zombies (where have I seen that before?!) Robert Neville is convinced that along with the help of his German Sheppard Sam he can find a cure for the virus and that one day people will roam the Earth again…
Although I was sceptical about this film I was also intrigued and being a big fan of Will Smith I thought I’d give this one a go so I went to see it at the cinema. After the beginning with the news transmission and the shot of Smith and his Dog driving around the city I thought to myself that maybe I’m wrong as this film is shaping up to be pretty good. Unfortunately the driving scene was stretched out far too much and I was relieved when it was finished. This film really doesn’t get more exciting than that, throughout the film you’ll see Neville looking for survivors and playing golf freely in the city and after about five minutes of seeing that the film has nothing more to offer.
I Am Legend drags on for 104 minutes, which is about the average length of a film however this felt more like 304 minutes as it dragged on so much. Most of the content that was added into the film was completely irrelevant. For instance Will Smith working out with his shirt off, although obviously I’m not going to complain about him taking his shirt off but there was absolutely no point to it. The entire film was just absolutely pointless and unnecessary.
I actually bought this film on DVD for my boyfriend’s birthday amongst other things a couple of weeks ago, not because I thought he’d enjoy it but because I knew that he wanted to see this and I thought I might as well let him see for himself how dire this film is because he didn’t believe me when I told him. After seeing it thankfully he agreed though although it did mean that I had to waste another 104 minutes of my life watching a dreadful film that I didn’t even like the first time!
This film has a very good storyline and it had the potential to be so much better than it was which is a shame because it had all the ingredients necessary to become a fantastic movie however this film falls flat and that’s not something I’m particularly used to saying when it comes to Will Smith films so I was quite disappointed with this despite thinking before seeing it that it may not be as good as it thinks it is.
The ending of this film, given what happens should be worth the wait but unfortunately it isn’t. Yes, it did have a powerful and well thought out ending but it wasn’t really worth the wait, the entire way through this film I was wondering what was going to happen at the end and I was just hoping that the ending would be enough to surpass the rest of this terrible film but it wasn’t. The ending, for me was just a bit of an anti-climax which again just left me disappointed.
I wouldn’t recommend this film to people who haven’t seen it however because of the hype surrounding this then it’s probably something you’ll want to see just out of curiosity anyway therefore I doubt my opinion will alter anyone’s desire to see this! In my opinion this film is a waste of time and you’re very likely to be disappointed but it’s probably best to find out for yourself because there have been such mixed reactions about this.
I bought this recently from play.com for £7.99 and after having a quick check today I’ve seen that it’s now only £5.99, which is a good price and means that even if you don’t like this then you haven’t lost much. There’s also a 2 disc special edition available that will cost you £15.99, it’s only that expensive because it comes in a steel case. The Blu-Ray edition will set you back 16.99.
The special features include: Alternative Ending A Cautionary Tale: The Science Behind I Am Legend The Making Of Animated Comic: Death As A Gift Animated Comic: Isolation Animated Comic: Sacrificing The Few For The Many Animated Comic: Shelter Animated Shorts Alternate Theatrical version Cautionary Tale: The Science of I Am Legend

Advantages: Good set design, good acting. Story line had potential to be good. Disadvantages: The way the film is filmed is too similar to alot of other films, why make this film???

Advantages: Stark portrayal of the madness of loneliness and terror Disadvantages: A bit slow, fails to take the risks of not being quite so mainstream
