~♥ INTRO ♥~
Usually I choose movies I want to see inspired by trailers on tv. Lately I don't watch it so often and I didn't choose to see I am Legend . Although the trailer was really engaging, my father was waiting for this film and he persuaded me to watch it. This kind of film is surely to my liking and I admit I really like the protagonist, Will Smith.
~♥ THE PLOT ♥~
In 2009, a researcher reveals she did a very exceptional discovery: a virus that can be genetically modified and can cure cancer in every case. Something doesn't go in the right way: virus has some unexpected secondary consequence... and it ends up to kill the whole world population in the space of a couple of years. New York is in ruins, vegetation and animals took possession of the streets... Here the only survivor of the epidemic lives: doctor Robert Neville with his only friend, his dog Sam. His days pass through the exercises to keep his body in good form, the research for food, the sending of messages on the radio to look for other possible survivors and his lab. In fact, the doctor hasn't abandoned hope to find a cure for the virus. In order to survive, then, it would not be enough for him to fight against his loneliness and against animals, because he's not really alone...
~♥ IMPRESSIONS ♥~
Movie is based on the novel by Richard Matheson, written in 1954, I haven't read. Inquiring on the net, I noticed the plot of the book is different from the film, exactly like the original meaning the writer gave to the title. I think it's worth reading the novel, for the reflections it could inspire... Talking about the movie, I cannot say I liked it.
Will Smith plays almost alone during all of the screening, except for the flashbacks and the last part. I found it very good and convincing. Surely his performance deserves a vision. Scenographies are remarkable too: images of the empty city in ruins get a sense of anguish and loneliness across. Direction is not bad, even if sometimes there are some blurred shots which almost bother us: maybe they're important to increase suspence, but I didn't appreciate them. Film pace is not driving, although some scenes make your heart beat faster: probably the purpose was to underline the boring routine which the protagonist is forced to, considering his loneliness and surely this effect works, to the detriment of suspence.
On the whole, I can't say this movie impressed me. It can be I didn't watch it with the proper concentration, but it didn't keep me with bated breath. I didn't get neither bored nor excited. It's a good movie but I thought it was better. People who saw it with me agree with my impressions, so I don't think my mood influences this opinion.
This kind of movie surely brings us to some reflection... We live in an age where science makes bigger and bigger progress quicker than before. If we think about headways done during the last years, it's natural to wonder: where can we arrive? It's almost expected to believe that soon we'll have the solution for every problem, that all the diseases which today kill people, tomorrow will have a cure. But the real question we should ask ourselves is if we'll be able to handle our discoveries. The quicker development of technology brings the human being to believe he's omnipotent... but the deep-seated imperfection of our species is our bigger enemy: if we don't limit us, if we don't keep in mind we can lost hold of things, the scenery indicated by this movie risks to be not so unreal.
Finally I recommend you to watch I am Legend : all things considered it's a good action movie. I think you won't be disappointed, if you don't look for a heart-stopping film.
It lasts 101 minutes more or less.
