Based on the novel written by Richard Matheson this adaptation has been a long time coming, question is, was it worth the wait?
First adapted in 1964 as 'The Last Man on Earth' and again in 1972 as the film 'The Omega Man' starring Charlton Heston. The story tells of Robert Neville (Will Smith) a brilliant scientist who is trapped in New York alone and unsure whether anyone else in the world has survived an apocalyptic disease. He and his dog, Sam, fight for their lives as they wonder the deserted streets of New York.
They thought that they had found the miracle cure for cancer but the vaccine which genetically changed harmful viruses, instead caused a mutation of human nature. The small number of humans that survived were hunted down and killed by the dark seekers. Neville seeks to discover the genetic code in his blood that has made him immune and dedicates his time trying to find a way to reverse the effects that have caused us humans to become cannibalistic hunters, but the doctor has his own demons to fight.
This adaptation is probably the best in the series although it didn't live up to a lot of peoples expectations. Smith, who seems addicted to doing these futuristic type thrillers, carries the film on some strong and charismatic acting. But it is the dog, played by, German Sheppard, Abbie, that really steals the show.
The film definitely has a feeling of, the classic story, The Time Machine.
The film is decidedly shorter than it could have been but the movie doesn't waste time on pointless story building it gets straight into the action with an understanding of how the virus occurred using flash back sequences.
Over all the film is pretty good, it is full of action and a strong performance from the fresh prince. But it's the supporting cast and the very computer style animated dark seekers that let this film down essentially.
The set designs are very good and the soundtrack is apt but not memorable with its spattering of Bob Marley classics.
