I am Legend is a science fiction film based on Richard Mathesons 1954 novel, that revolves around a lone survivor in New York at the centre of an evacuation of the city due to a mutant virus caused by an immunisation of the New York people with a new cancer cure. With many of the residents becoming mutant humans that bear a great resemblance to a cross between a vampire and a zombie, Dr Robert Neville (Will Smith) vows to stay in New York until he can find a cure to end this catastrophe.
Now, alone in New York city for three years with the mutant creatures, Dr Robert Neville and his dog continue searching for fellow survivors which leads to an emotional journey as we see Dr. Neville look back into his past at the death of his partner and daughter as they are taken to safety due to a helicopter accident. Also, Dr. Nevilles interaction with the frozen residents of New York leads to an emotional and fabulous act by Smith as you feel a deep, sympathetic bond with him.
But, it is not just an emotional film. The thrilling and at parts horrifying events include battles with the mutants while Dr. Neville searches for survivors and engaging in adventures such as riding around an empty New York.
Being immune to the virus, Dr. Neville continues to research and search for survivors with the now famous saying heard on the adverts.
"My name is Robert Neville. I am a survivor living in New York City. I am broadcasting on all AM frequencies. I will be at the South Street Seaport everyday at mid-day, when the sun is highest in the sky. If you are out there... if anyone is out there... I can provide food, I can provide shelter, I can provide security. If there's anybody out there... anybody... please. You are not alone. "
Though occasionally slow at times, the fantastic performances by Smith more than make up as we see a side of him not seen in films such as Men In Black or iRobot. Also, the 'scary' moments, though not as common as you would like, do provide a 'hide behind your duvet' moment as you eagerly anticipate what happens next.
The climax to the film is an interesting one, which does provide a tear jerker moment and at that moment, seemingly ends the change of a sequel. However, the special DVD's contain an alternate ending which may be used as there are rumours of a sequel due to the popularity of the film.
Overall, an emotional and thrilling ride in a mutant ridden population of New York city. If you have seen this film before, the special features on the DVD will provide additional entertainment and if you didn't see it at the cinema, then this is a must see for you. The film lasts for 101 minutes and so is a decent 1 hour 40 to watch. The film is also rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi action and violence.

Sorry for the H, but if this is to be a full DVD review, I would prefer to see a review of the extras in similar detail to the way you've reviewed the film, rather than just a passing mention of them.

Good review but i disagree about the film. The book is one of my favourites, but the film was pretty bad. The book had an awesome ending, but in the film they went for the usual Hollywood ending. And the effects in the film were terrible! The only thing I liked was seeing the spectacular scenes of New York completely deserted during the day.

Advantages: Great Film + Story, Sublime Acting, Sam (the dog) and Smith work so well together Disadvantages: Not long running length (1Hr 26 mins approx), Fans of the book may be displeased
