After a man-made virus decimates the world's population, only military virologist Robert Neville is left unaffected. By day he roams the deserted streets of Manhattan, stockpiling supplies and sending out radio messages in the hopes of being heard by other survivors. By night he locks himself in his fortified home, hiding from the ravening, blood-thirsty infected. He is determined to find a cure for the disease and the ghastly mutations it causes. But he is vastly outnumbered and running out of time…

"Constantine" director Francis Lawrence's take on this post-apocalyptic classic is at its most successful during the opening half-an-hour. It opens with a news report about Dr Crippin's medical discovery that will put an end to cancer. So we know the source of the virus before we jump ahead three years. In much the same way as in "28 Days Later" it is extremely eerie to see a bustling metropolis completely abandoned and derelict. It's an urban jungle turned semi-wild wasteland with the wind whipping through it, vegetation growing in the streets and wild animals roaming around unchecked. During this period we get to know the main character and his relationship with his only companion, Sam the dog. Sam becomes a character in their own right during this phase, so when the worst inevitably happens later we feel a real emotional wrench. This time also allows us to bond with the lead and understand the extent of his loneliness and his obsession with finding a cure for the disease. There's a sense of routine to his actions, from hunting and gathering to locking down his house as night falls and the piercing shrieks of the infected reverberate while he sleeps in the bath with his rifle for protection. The visuals are glossy and the big action sequences are slick. This is particularly true of the flashback sequences where we see Neville trying to get his family to safety. Then there are big crowd scenes, even bigger explosions and big stunts. So you can see where the enormous budget is going but it does feel rather impersonal. The director fares better when Neville is forced into a building where he knows his enemies may be lurking and a chase scene unfolds that taps into our primeval fear of the dark. Lawrence ups the ante by using hand-held camera that gives more immediacy to the situation and shows us little of the hero's pursuers.

However, Lawrence squanders all the goodwill he has accrued during the opening half-hour as soon as he introduces the bad guys. Then the film stops being about people and starts being about special effects. He shows too much too soon and continues on an excessive bent thereafter. The infected are pure CGI; grey, slimy-skinned, hairless, Gollum-like creations that may have the edge in numbers but do nothing to create a sense of menace. It's because they appear soulless; though there are suggestions of a kind of hive mind mentality, they don't have any strong emotional responses to anything. So there's no real reason for them to go after Neville with such a vengeance. Because they don't speak, we have no idea about their motivations and the whole movie becomes a one-man-against-the-monsters thing. You never feel like Will Smith is in danger because they are so obviously computer-generated, as with the animals on his hunting trip in the city. The later stunts rectify this in some small manner as they are more physical. But all the great action in the world can't undo the damage created by a sickeningly Hollywood ending that completely undermines what has gone before. And the launch into pure action causes crunching shifts of gear and upsets the pacing of what could otherwise have been a slow-burn chiller. The result is an often frustrating, underwhelming hundred-and-ten-minutes of missed opportunities.

The screenplay by Mark Protosevich and Akiva Goldsman sits very firmly in the Hollywood action movie category. Those hoping the third interpretation of Richard Matheson's novel of the same name would be much closer than previous attempts are going to be sorely disappointed. About the only thing that remains the same is the main character's name. He's no longer an engineer, he isn't haunted by the thought of his wife and kids being turned into ravening monsters and he isn't constantly taunted by his blood-sucking former neighbour and chums who know exactly where he lives. Instead he's a Hollywood action man with brains and brawn determined to cure the monstrous mutants of their terrible affliction from his secret hideout. And the title no longer refers to his status among the vampire community for whom he has become a mythical creature due to his habit of bumping off many of their number. It's now become the raison d'être for a cop-out ending that will have you slapping your forehead in disbelief at just how naff it is.

The decision to make Neville's opponents faceless killers diminishes the power of the story. It would be much more compelling if the hero was butting heads with sentient beings with clear wants and needs. For instance, a desire for revenge would make their actions more believable and give more of an emotional edge to Neville's research. It would then lead you to question the morality of what he's doing, what "normal" is and whether what has happened is mutation in the negative sense or evolution. It may seem odd to harp on about what isn't in the script, but that's because there really isn't much going on in terms of story in this version. Neville essentially mopes around New York with his dog, snags a mutant to experiment on and then comes under siege. He's a likeable enough hero but there isn't enough depth to the narrative for you to remember much of the movie once the credits roll. The dialogue is limited, but I guess it's difficult to write for someone who spends much of the movie talking to himself.

It's a good job Will Smith is a charismatic leading man because there are few actors I'd want to watch wandering around the abandoned streets of a major metropolis with his faithful mutt for half-an-hour. It's to his credit that he manages to be engaging throughout, remaining likeable even when battling against underwhelming computer-generated bad guys. He's sincere and serious throughout, suggesting a greater depth to the character than the script should allow.

The original music by James Newton Howard is pretty much par for the course for this type of movie. It begins with forbidding electronic rumbles and continues with a series of short dark string motifs that add atmosphere to the empty city. Neville's solitude is underlined by sad, heartfelt piano motifs and warm, rising string arrangements. His hunting trip is accompanied by unsettling timpani, chimes and strings. The flashbacks to the evacuation feature brooding, rising strings with warm brass and plaintive piano and rising strings bring tension to the final attack.

"I Am Legend" has a promising start but falls into cliché when it turns Hollywood action movie. It's a shame because Will Smith's committed performance hints at a deeper, more emotionally satisfying story. The direction is workmanlike but undermined by the number of visual effects shots that suck the menace out of the situation. The writing does itself no favours by wimping out and throwing in an unnecessary happy ending that struggles to justify the name of the movie. So overall the film is disappointing and certainly won't become a legend.
