I am Legend
My husband and I bought this DVD at Sainsbury's last week for £9.79 as I have really wanted to see it ever since it came out in the cinema as I had heard good things about it, e.g. it is scary and intelligent and makes you jump.
Well after watching it I can't decided whether I liked it or not and I'm still not sure about it. The same for my husband and a few people I have talked to about it, they all kind of say, hum, not sure, couldn't work it out.
I am Legend stars Will Smith as a military virologist called Robert Neville. Now, I never like to give away the story or endings in my DVD reviews so I will give you a basic overview of the movie. However, you may want to look away now as I am going to reveal a bit of the story, it's actually about Vampires!! I didn't know this until my husband told me as all the trailers for it just imply that Will Smith is not alone on earth.
Basically a scientist finds a cure for cancer ( a brilliant cameo from Emma Thompson as the scientist) that is made from the measles virus and starts immunising people. Fast forward three years later and the cure has turned into an unstoppable, incurable virus that turns people into mutant plague ridden victims. These victims are the vampires; they only come out at night because they are affected by daylight as well as various other vampire actions.
I think you have to like Will Smith to watch this film as there are a lot of scenes with just him in it. He is the lone survivor in New York and so far is immune to the virus. His aim in life is now to find an antidote to the virus using his own blood. There are lots of great shots of a very isolated New York though which is quite eerie. It would be unthinkable to imagine New York like this and I think the silence of the city and the realisation that nothing is going to change comes across quite well in the film. There is not much background music to take away the quiet so all you can hear is the sound of silence and the noise of the crickets. It's interesting to see their take on how buildings and streets decay in three years of no-one tending to them. It is also quite interesting to see all the weeds that have grown up through the cracks in the streets, would this really happen?, probably.
I was a bit worried that I would be bored watching the film if it just showed Will Smith walking around on his own all the time but it did include some very well crafted flashbacks to show the progression of the virus and what caused it and how the city was dealing with it.
In my opinion the star of the show is his lovely Alsatian dog Sam who goes everywhere with him. He almost seems human as he really listens to what Will Smith has to say (I guess as he is the only survivor left Will has no choice but to talk to him like another human being) and helps fight the plague victims with great bravery.
There are some scary points in this movie that did make me jump. The odd door banging, etc but there is a scene with a mannequin ( they are scary anyway) that really send a shiver down your spine!
The ending is interesting, not sure if I liked it or not but I will leave that up to you to decide. Apparently on the Special Edition DVD there is an alternate ending but we just got the regular DVD so now special ending for us. It's one of those films that I probably would not watch again either.
Our DVD did contain special features - four awesome animated comics: Death as a gift Isolation Sacrificing the few for the many Shelter
The film is rated 15 due to strong violence and horror and I would definitely not let young kids watch it as I'm sure it would cause nightmares. It runs for approximately 96 minutes so quite a short film as well.
