I finally gave in and watched this movie last night. When I first saw the trailers I thought it looked amazing, then the trailers were changed and I was suprised to see that this film had "zombies" in it, or so it seemed. Okay so being a girly girl watching zombie films is far from my idea of fun. Promptly decided this film is not for me.
Until one of my friends assured me this was not a zombie film, not at all. I should definately watch.
I read some reviews and thought I'd give it a go.
We enter in the year 2012. Military Scientist Dr. Robert Neville lives in the deserted ravaged city of New York alone, except for his faithful German Shepherd, Sam and various wild animals. The plot unfolds through Robert Neville's day to day activities, and a series of flashbacks.
In 2009, Dr. Alice Krippin (Emma Thompson) is believed to have found a cure for cancer. Through genetic engineering, she has reworked a virus, and it has proven to leave sufferers cancer free in 10,009 cases (of 10,009).
Unfortunately, the virus is not so friendly after all. It turns most of humanity into "zombie like" creatures, kills others, and those that are left are at the mercy of the the "zombies" known as dark seekers.
Dr. Neville is spending his days travelling the city, gathering supplies, and researching to try and find a cure. He spends his nights locked in his fortress like home, trying to sleep in the bathtub with his dog, as all manner of howls and inhuman noises come from outside.
As far as we can tell there are no other survivors. Dr. Neville has proven immune to both contact and airborne strains of the virus, his dog is immune only to airborne strains. This leads to much panicking through the film that the dog is going to become infected, or die in some other horrific way, leaving Neville ever more alone which is obviously the idea.
We are also left wondering what actually happened to Nevilles wife and daughter, wondering if he even knows.
I am not going to go into more detail of the plot here as it will then include spoilers for those of you who do want to watch.
This film is certainly eerie with some truly cruelly nailbiting moments, but honestly on the whole I was dissapointed. I do expect a lot from Will Smith being a huge fan, and he was excellent in his role as always, but I couldn't help feeling this film was a bit boring. A lot of the time I was thinking I should be really freaked out by the empty streets, the deserted buildings and so on, but I just wasn't. It could just be me, but in my opinion, this movie wasn't all it was cracked up to be.
Worth a watch once, don't think I'd watch again.

Once again, a good film review, but I see you've posted this as a DVD review, but you've not mentioned the DVD features. Are there any extras? If so, what are they and are they any good? If you add to this, or if you change it to be posted as a "Film Only" review, which can be done by accessing "edit review" above the review and changing the drop down menu under the "Which format are you reviewing?" question at the bottom, please let me know and I'll re-rate.

Advantages: Great Film + Story, Sublime Acting, Sam (the dog) and Smith work so well together Disadvantages: Not long running length (1Hr 26 mins approx), Fans of the book may be displeased

Review of I Am Legend (DVD)
Advantages: Will Smith plays role brilliantly, overall the film is good Disadvantages: Slow, he isn't strictly the only one left alive, CGI rough around edges
