reprints series. I Am Legend, though, was a trailblazing and later much imitated story that reinvented the vampire myth as SF. Without losing the horror, it presents vampirism as a disease whose secrets can be unlocked by scientific tools. The hero Robert Neville, perhaps the last uninfected man on Earth, finds himself in a paranoid nightmare. By night, the bloodthirsty undead of small-town America besiege his barricaded house: their repeated cry "Come out, Neville!" is a famous SF catchphrase. By day, when they hide in shadow and become comatose, Neville gets out his wooden stakes for an orgy of slaughter. He also discovers pseudoscientific explanations, some rather strained, for vampires' fear of light, vulnerability to stakes though not bullets, loathing of garlic, and so on. What gives the story its uneasy power is the gradual perspective shift which shows that by fighting monsters Neville is himself becoming monstrous--not a vampire but something to terrify vampires and haunt their dreams as a dreadful legend from the bad old days. I Am Legend was altered out of recognition when filmed as The Omega Man (1971), starring Charlton Heston. Avoid the movie; read the book. --David Langford

I Am Legend is a the huge blockbuster film starring the one and only yep, you guessed it Will Smith! Most critics reacted well towards this film, and I can fully understand why because this film did have the potential to be an epic and with a lead actor like Will Smith it should have been.

Will Smith is a man who probably needs no introduction. Besides probably being every girls dream guy he’s one of the, if not the biggest movie star on the planet. He’s appeared in smash hits such as: Bad Boys, Ali, Enemy Of The State and Seven Pounds.
It’s the year 2012 and a revolutionary cure for Cancer has been found, there’s only one problem, instead of curing the world from one of the most feared diseases it takes out the entire population bar one man Robert Neville… or so he thinks.
Robert Neville is a US soldier and most prominently one of the last people on Earth. The miracle Cancer cure hasn’t just wiped out the population, it’s turned them into zombies (where have I seen that before?!) Robert Neville is convinced that along with the help of his German Sheppard Sam he can find a cure for the virus and that one day people will roam the Earth again…
Although I was sceptical about this film I was also intrigued and being a big fan of Will Smith I thought I’d give this one a go so I went to see it at the cinema. After the beginning with the news transmission and the shot of Smith and his Dog driving around the city I thought to myself that maybe I’m wrong as this film is shaping up to be pretty good. Unfortunately the driving scene was stretched out far too much and I was relieved when it was finished. This film really doesn’t get more exciting than that, throughout the film you’ll see Neville looking for survivors and playing golf freely in the city and after about five minutes of seeing that the film has nothing more to offer.
I Am Legend drags on for 104 minutes, which is about the average length of a film however this felt more like 304 minutes as it dragged on so much. Most of the content that was added into the film was completely irrelevant. For instance Will Smith working out with his shirt off, although obviously I’m not going to complain about him taking his shirt off but there was absolutely no point to it. The entire film was just absolutely pointless and unnecessary.
I actually bought this film on DVD for my boyfriend’s birthday amongst other things a couple of weeks ago, not because I thought he’d enjoy it but because I knew that he wanted to see this and I thought I might as well let him see for himself how dire this film is because he didn’t believe me when I told him. After seeing it thankfully he agreed though although it did mean that I had to waste another 104 minutes of my life watching a dreadful film that I didn’t even like the first time!
This film has a very good storyline and it had the potential to be so much better than it was which is a shame because it had all the ingredients necessary to become a fantastic movie however this film falls flat and that’s not something I’m particularly used to saying when it comes to Will Smith films so I was quite disappointed with this despite thinking before seeing it that it may not be as good as it thinks it is.
The ending of this film, given what happens should be worth the wait but unfortunately it isn’t. Yes, it did have a powerful and well thought out ending but it wasn’t really worth the wait, the entire way through this film I was wondering what was going to happen at the end and I was just hoping that the ending would be enough to surpass the rest of this terrible film but it wasn’t. The ending, for me was just a bit of an anti-climax which again just left me disappointed.
I wouldn’t recommend this film to people who haven’t seen it however because of the hype surrounding this then it’s probably something you’ll want to see just out of curiosity anyway therefore I doubt my opinion will alter anyone’s desire to see this! In my opinion this film is a waste of time and you’re very likely to be disappointed but it’s probably best to find out for yourself because there have been such mixed reactions about this.
I bought this recently from play.com for £7.99 and after having a quick check today I’ve seen that it’s now only £5.99, which is a good price and means that even if you don’t like this then you haven’t lost much. There’s also a 2 disc special edition available that will cost you £15.99, it’s only that expensive because it comes in a steel case. The Blu-Ray edition will set you back 16.99.

Advantages: Good film, could be better tho! Disadvantages: Rubbish CGI, poor ending!
I Am Legend was released in 2007, and directed by Francis Lawrence, a relative newcomer to the directing business, who's only other piece of work worth mentioning was Constantine. The movie is based on a 1954 novel by Richard Matheson, which has been adapted for the silver screen twice before, as The Last Man on Earth in 1964, and as The Omega Man in 1971. The movie stars Will Smith in the lead role, and also features his daughter, Willow Smith, ... ...he becomes their victim.
I have very much mixed feelings about this film. Having been a big fan of The Omega Man, and also of Will Smith, I really wanted to enjoy this film, and to be honest I did, but maybe not to the degree I had hoped. This is a really good movie, however there are many features in the film that could have been better, and could have made the film the blockbuster that it should have been.
There are three key elements to this ...

Having exhausted every other way I could think possible to escape actually having to tidy (yep, EVERY way) I glanced at the pile. On the top was a film I've been trying to avoid just as much as the cleaning. The film company has owned the rights to the books since the seventies. That's older than me that is! They have also tried to get this film out there before but, for various reason, the production fell through.
Instead of this rearing its head sooner, other films with similar ideas popped up (such as that one where you get to see the cute guys willy at ...

Advantages: Stark portrayal of the madness of loneliness and terror Disadvantages: A bit slow, fails to take the risks of not being quite so mainstream
I Am Legend opens with a news report: It's 2009, and - without as much fanfare as you'd expect - Emma Thomson calmly announces they've created a cure for cancer. Every human trial has been successful; a genetic re-engineering of the measles virus has eliminated mankind's biggest health fear.
Fast forward 3 years, and it has eliminated mankind.

And it's the moment Sam is placed in danger that Will Smith's character suddenly shows real emotion and the whole thing becomes a bit more interesting.

...in the usual pattern that I was expecting. I enjoy watching end of the world type scenario's like The Day After Tomorrow or Independence Day - big action films, when humanity pulls together to save the world. However, although the film does centre on disease killing off the population, here the similarity ends. The 15 certificate is a clue that this is not family entertainment and the film is a lot darker than the aforementioned films. The main hero ... ...now look like zombies. (Hope I haven't given too much away there - but this does become apparent in the early stage of the film) Robert Neville hopes his medical research will be able to help them return to their former selves. Although, other characters participate in the film, most notably in a series of flashbacks, Will Smith has a lot of screen time, so if you are not a fan, then it is best to avoid this film altogether. ==***Opinion***== I was ...

and when she picked IAmLegend, I wasn't particularly happy about her choice, and had to watch this DVD because it's part of the house rules.
This film is adapted from the 1957 novel by Richard Matheson. This novel has been made into a film 3 times. It was first adapted in 1964 as "The Last Man on Earth", then in 1971 as "The Omega Man". And then finally in 2007, "IAmLegend"
The director of this film is Francis Lawrence. I don't know what to say about this director. Okay, so I didn't enjoy this film, and didn't expect I would either. But that doesn't make him a bad director; any director who had decided to direct this film couldn't have done it better, and possibly couldn't have done it worse. Francis, I presume, is a really good director and has 3 new films coming up; also he is mostly linked with the music video industry, as he has ...
Advantages: A charismatic performance from Will Smith and great opening half-hour. Disadvantages: Too many effects and not enough story.
with warm brass and plaintive piano and rising strings bring tension to the final attack.
"IAmLegend" has a promising start but falls into cliché when it turns Hollywood action movie. It's a shame because Will Smith's committed performance hints at a deeper, more emotionally satisfying story. The direction is workmanlike but undermined by the number of visual effects shots that suck the menace out of the situation. The writing does itself no favours by wimping out and throwing in an unnecessary happy ending that struggles to justify the name of the movie. So overall the film is disappointing and certainly won't become a legend. ...

Based on the 1954 novel by Richard Matheson.
Starring: Will Smith (with a short appearance by Alice Braga towards the end of the movie).
Released in 2007 this was always going to be one of Will Smiths most challenging rolls, acting solo through most of the movie.
Sadly, compared to Wills other movies, such as 'I robot', 'Men in Black 1 and 2' 'Independence day' and many many more, this movie lacked something to which Will Smith, regardless of his talent, could do anything to salvage.

The film is based in 2012 and opens with flash backs from 2009, showing the human race being wiped out by what was grown as the cure for cancer.
