Andy Little is a renown angler and has been an angling journalist for many years. What he doesn't know about angling isn't worth worying about. This dvd is broken down into 2 episodes. The first part teaches you about tackle, bait, rigs, line choice and a look into Andys tackle box. The second part teaches the basics of watercraft and what tactics you should use in different situations. So lets start with How to take up coarse fishing part 1.
Rod choice ==========
12ft two piece, 2 3/4lb test curve with a fast action.
This rod will allow you to fish for carp at distance. The power a fast action rod produces not only alows you to cast great distances but also gives you great strength to play large hard-fighting carp that you may have hooked 100yds away.
12ft two piece 1 3/4lb test curve with a through action.
This rod, due to its much softer action, allows you to fish in the margins. The rod actually absorbs the power of the fish so you can controll the fish in a gentler way thus avioding line breaks.
Landing net ==========
Your choice of landing net should be no smaller than 3ft across, triangular in shape and have a good depth. When you net your fish you should lift the net by holding both sides of the net, do not lift the landing net by the handle as this will break it.
Unhooking mat =============
This is an extremely valuable piece of equipment. After landing your prize catch, the last thing you want to do is to damage what maybe the fish of a lifetime. So the use of an unhooking mat to cushion the fish from the ground, which might be made from gravel or some other hard surface, is an absolute must. Many waters now state that the use of unhooking mats are compulsory.
Reels =====
Freespool system (baitrunner)
The freespool system allows the line to be dispatched from the reel under tension, so a fish can obtain line just after hooking itself. When fishing at range the tension should be set high, and when fishing in the margins the tension should be low.
Fixed spool
You can use an ordinary fixed spool reel to go carp fishing, they are very good for fishing in the margins and float fishing too. If you use this type of reel for ledgering you may want to purchase a line clip. The clip allows you to open your bail arm and clip up your line to your rod, so if a carp takes your bait and bolts you don't get cracked off.
Rod pod ========
The rod pod is now a standard piece of equipment for carp and pike anglers. It is a variable type of rod rest with four adjustable legs. The ability to adjust the legs independantly allows you to level your rod pod on any ground. This in conjunction with flexi butt grips to hold your rods secure, a couple of swinger indicators with adjustable sensitivity and a couple of audible alarms complete the perfect set up.
Bait ====
Bread Sweetcorn Chopped ham and pork Lunceon meat Boilies (6mm-25mm) Chum mixer (floating bait) Trout pellets Particles
Since carp will eat almost anything the list of bait you could use is almost endless. But if you intend to use particle bait you must prepare them well in advance. Since a particle could be a nut, seed, bean or fruit they should be soaked in hot water for a while and then cooked. This softens and rehydrates the particles so that and fish feeding on them will come to no harm. Some examples of particles are; hemp, kidney beans, tiger nuts and peanuts.
10lb mainline Metal putty 1 1/2oz ledger Rubber stops to semi-fix the ledger in place 10lb dacron hooklink Pop up bait
Aswell as the above rigs Andy also explains the correct way to make a helicopter rig and how to use a surface controller.
Dental floss hair rig ================
To make sure you present your bait the right way you should firstly cut a 6in piece of dental floss and tie an overhand loop in the end. Now the bait should be placed onto a baiting needle and threaded onto the floss and part of the loop should be pulled through so a boilie stop can be fitted. This should then be tightened and the loose end of the floss is to be passed through the eye of your hook and wound back along the shank. Now a drop of superglue can be applied to secure the hair into position.
There are many more lessons in this first installment including the correct usage of a carp sack, how to present tiger nuts as a pop up, the use of a throwing stick and much much more...
Runtime 55mins
Part 2 =====
I will be very brief on my description of part 2 but second part teaches the basics in watercraft, things to look for, where to fish and why you should fish there, the use of binoculars and polaroid sunglasses, how to fish in lilly pads using a PVA bag, how to balance your tackle and loads more besides. But I will tell you one thing that is on part two......
Particle pop-up =============
Cork ball Gum Seeds Hook with a hair Metal putty
Since particles are normally small the only way to present them is to glue them in place on a cork ball. This is then hair rigged and metal putty is added to the hooklink to make the bait almost neutrally buoyant. This is a deadly bait when presented the right way, and one I have used to great effect.
I'm sorry this review is shorter than part one but you really have to watch part two to appreciate it.
Runtime 48mins Made 1994 Extras Previews of 6 more titles in the series. Cost £9
This is the most informative dvd on carp fishing I have seen to date and I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in carp fishing but is unsure what to do.
Advantages: Learn about Cuttle Mill Disadvantages: It's too old
of today need a more thorough explanation of howto catch carp, and for me too much information was omitted, like the hellicopter rig, the zig rig, howtofish a floater and even howto use particles for groundbait!!!
Why should anyone want to buy this, well I haven't a clue. I'm just glad that I borrowed this dvd from a friend.
In my opinion SAVE YOUR MONEY and buy something with a lot more content. I'll highly recommend Andy Little's dvd on howtotakeupcarpfishing as an alternative.
