This is one of the best movies that I ever watched. I think that how to lose a guy in 10 days incorporates all the elements needed to make a successful romantic comedy: Laughs, Humoristic Appeal, Romance, Great Acting, a little splash of tragic drama, and fantastic thematic elements. That’s not to mention the truly refreshing cast who obviously poured their very beings into their respective roles. I was extremely impressed by the way that the plot flew in the film- there was no breaks- everything flew quite smoothly and the various subplots closely followed the main story. I have to say that I was a little bit late in watching this popular film and the last movie I saw Kate Hudson in was Brideswar. I simply couldn’t believe the transformation! Matthew McConaughey did not impress me as much as Hudson because she had more dualistic roles to play than him and I think that it was largely due to her that the movie got uplifted to where it ranks today.
The plot depicts the life of Andie- an ambitious journalist who is fed up of
writing insignificant fashion columns for the magazine that she is working for. When her boss promises her freedom to write on whatever she wants as long as Andie comes up with an exceptional column, the latter decides to do some first hand field work for her latest piece- How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. She meets Ben and decides that he will be the guinea pig for her article and once they start to date, Andie turns into the worst girlfriend ever in order to encourage Ben to dump her in ten days. There is a slight hitch though- In order to get a promotion, Ben is actually working on proving his boss that he can make a girl fall in love with him in 10 days…
It was the plot itself that appealed me- I was particularly intrigued to see how the producers would pull out something like that; I mean, the plot first seemed quite complicated to me at first because I kept on wondering where the element of love lay within a woman and a man who are in a relationship only for their personal gains. I have to admit that the plot was extremely well pulled off, because it kept me quite captivated to the end. I will not say that the movie was unpredictable, in fact, there are parts where it seems quite predictable; yet, certain elements are introduced in order to keep the audience captivated for a while.
In addition, the acting was quite well done. The main actors were great, and like I mentioned above, Kate Hudson delivered an outstanding performance. But, I was also quite impressed by the secondary actors in the film. It is quite rare that secondary and/or minor actors gave such great performances but this certainly is not the case in that movie. The two scheming women who set Ben up with Andie certainly add an original twist to the plot as a whole! I would also say that both Andie’s and Ben’s friends provide refreshing breaks when the plot starts to get a little too intense and heavy.
Of course love is omnipresent in the film, and that was an element that I particularly enjoyed. I was extremely dismayed by some so-called romantic comedies that put drama and melodrama in the foreground and then centers love and humor somewhere in the background. However, in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, the element of love and romantic atmosphere is really striking- and that, I must say, was really impressing to me, considering the story where Andie and Ben are with each other out of pure devious scheming!
The main cast includes: • Kate Hudson • Matthew McConaughey • Kathryn Hahn • Annie Parisse • Adam Goldberg • Thomas Lennon
DVD Bonus features include: • Commentary tracks • Deleted Scenes • Featurettes • Music Video
My favourite part of the bonus features was the Featurettes. Give them a try, they are really fun!
Overall, this is a certain must see that I would recommend to all those who love Romantic Movies like me. It is extremely fun, light and romantic, and best of all, since so much is depicted from both the actor and actress’ points of view, I would say that this film is one of the rare movies that are perfectly suited for all audiences- regardless of gender.
Highly Recommended!
